Chronic Fast Forward – Indiana Jones (Bethesda): More Than One New Uncharted-Like One?
It’s time for the father of the Hollywood treasure hunt to return to the top of the video game scene. Recently, Bethesda actually released a teaser for a new game, Indiana Jones, developed by Machine Games and to which we owe the youngest Wolfenstein, all in partnership with the video game industry at Lucas Film. No release date or platform has been announced yet, and we will certainly have to wait for Microsoft to complete the Bethesda buyout to find out more. In the meantime, nothing prevents us from following certain paths.

An impressive and fast-paced action-adventure game
Since the advent of Uncharted as a benchmark for single player action adventure games, there have been several titles like the last one Grave robbers or even Jedi: Fall Order adopted the formula to suit their sauce, to the point where we speak of Uncharted-like today. A name synonymous with phases of escalation, narration, and Hollywood action, all with impressive tech and sustained pace. So it’s hard to imagine Machine Games missing out on those ingredients that have already been tried and tested.
This new Indiana Jones should therefore be technically impressive, especially when we know that the sets from Shadow of the Tomb Raider (latest installment), and Uncharted 4 in particular, have already set the bar very high and that Machine Games can count on the performance of New generation consoles. We can therefore expect lush forests weeping with truth, or even dark temples with eye-catching lighting effects, like in the remake of Demon’s Souls.
Of course, there will also be action scenes featuring Professor Jones’ famous revolver and whip, a whip that can also be used to swing from one surface to another, like old licensed games or, more recently, Uncharted 4. But certainly one less spectacular and imaginative result than for Nathan Drake. Indiana Jones is portrayed in the films as a normal person with certainly courage, but above all a lot of success and not as an ultra-agile superhero.
The choice of the third person
As with the biggest hits of the genre, this new Indiana Jones can only be imagined in the third person, even if the Machine Games studio responsible for the project worked almost exclusively on it Wolfenstein, dystopian FPS a far cry from archaeological digs and treasure hunters wearing hats.
However, there is nothing to worry about. Several studios have already made it from rooster to video game donkey with great success. We particularly think of guerrilla games that have been used to the dark and depressing world of FPS for years Death zoneahead of the release of Horizon: Zero Dawn, a colorful and very well-made third-party action-adventure game.
Additionally, Machine Games can count on support from the rest of the Bethesda family, such as Tango Gameworks, who previously worked on games for third parties. And it gets even better when Bethesda, and with it Machine Games, officially join the Microsoft family. Do a long search there be fore you find big, impressive TPS. We immediately think of the coalition and the license Gears of war
A scenario that deserves its name
If one can have doubts about the third or first person, it is certain that Machine Games is not that bad a candidate when it comes to writing. The studio’s games, while pretty trashy, are pretty well-written and often funny, which goes well with the tone of Indiana Jones, a license that’s mostly mainstream with action and often pretty unusual moments like this famous scene where the professor kills an opponent who wields the sword with a bullet.
More precisely, Disney is announcing “a totally original story set at the height of the famous adventurer’s career”. And if we look closely at the teaser shared by Bethesda, we can even see the name of the city of Rome on a plane ticket. Professor Jones, a place full of history and legends, perfect for the license, dispelled myths like the Grail or the Ark of the Covenant. We can therefore imagine our favorite adventurer looking for a new object or a millennial place that would inevitably arouse the lust of evil geniuses. And who, besides the Nazis, embodies this role, favorite villains of the adventurer and Wolfenstein’s films.
An important piece of work in the lore of Indiana Jones
There is no doubt that Indiana Jones will have to use fists to get rid of his enemies in this new game. We can easily think of simple but effective phases of action, with a cover system, different weapons, the use of the whip as we mentioned earlier, a bit like, yes, still Uncharted 4. We cite the baby of naughty a lot from the start Dog from this video, but of course we want Professor Jones’ return to stand out from him.
Machine Game could, for example, bring back characters from the films, like Marcus Brody, who serves as the protagonist to keep the narrative moving in a fluid way, or even create the missing link between two of the feature films, like Jedi did: Fallen Order. So the title Machine Games would have a real interest that couldn’t just be a good game.
In short, right now it’s hard to think of this Indiana Jones as any other than a new Uncharted-esque one, but with a less Hollywood and wacky approach than for the box of Naughty Dog. In any case, Machine Games and Bethesda have everything they need to deliver a great action-adventure game, both technically successful and fast-paced.
