On the 21st anniversary of Fatal Frame’s launch in 2001, developer Koei Tecmo sent a short thank you message to fans for their support. As a further treat, the team also shared new screenshots and details about the upcoming remake Fatal Frame: Eclipse Mask.
Remastered releases on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch and PC March 9, 2023. This will be a global release and actually marks the first time Fatal Frame: Eclipse Mask has opened in the west. The game was originally released in Japan in 2008 exclusively for the Nintendo Wii.
Needless to say, Fatal Frame fans all over the world are excited to finally get to play the game for themselves. Especially considering that the first three games in the series, and even the fifth, will be accessible in more regions around the world at launch; the Eclipse mask has been on some players’ backlog for quite some time, that’s for sure.
Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse follows a similar premise to previous titles in the series. The game takes place on Rogetsu Isle, where five girls mysteriously disappeared during the Rogetsu Festival many years ago.
Ten years pass, the bodies of two of the girls are found dead, and the remaining three travel to Rogetsu Isle to find answers about what happened to their friends and themselves all those years ago. As the girls use flashlights and moonlight to uncover more clues, they’ll roam through scenes such as the Ashfield Infirmary, the Green Moon Hall, and the Moonlight Point Lighthouse to learn more about what happened all those years ago.
Of course, the Camera Obscura is back; a key mechanic of Fatal Frame. This item is used to fight off hostile ghosts, and usually needs to be upgraded as the game progresses and the spirit becomes stronger. As the girls do their best to fight off these vengeful spirits, they’ll uncover memories, secrets, and more in an eerie, low-lit setting.
The game will also feature a new photo mode, allowing you to take haunting photos of your horror adventures, and the game’s original lineup of costumes has been altered with the addition of new outfits. So no matter what happens, you’ll be dressed up.
Are you looking forward to Fatal Frame: Eclipse Mask, or are you still waiting for Fatal Frame and Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly? In the meantime, for more unsettling horror experiences, be sure to check out what we think are the best horror games of all time.
