Electronic Arts finally wants to enable cross-platform play in FIFA 22 and will soon be sending the corresponding cross-play feature into an initial test phase.
For many years, players of the FIFA series could only compete against other gamers on the same platform. This should change in the future, so that players on PlayStation and Xbox can also duel; the FIFA series should therefore become more independent of the choice of platform and bring friends from different consoles together.
According to official information, such a cross-play feature should now go into a first test phase “in the near future” in the current part of FIFA 22. The functionality initially extends to the game modes online seasons and online friendly games and is carried out on the platforms PS5, Xbox Series X/S and Google Stadia. The PC is just as little mentioned in this context as the last-gen consoles PS4 and Xbox One.
EA provides the background why initially only the two modes mentioned are supported: In this way, when it is first introduced, you want to avoid new problems occurring in the game because you went straight to the top. The aim of the test phase in these modes is to collect data and feedback in order to then determine the further roadmap for the further development of the cross-play feature. Cross-play will then be implemented more deeply, especially in new titles.
However, access to cross-play should be quite simple: as soon as the feature is available, there is a corresponding widget in the lower right corner of the menu, which guides you through the activation. Participation in the test phase is also available via the matchmaking options menu. You can then add friends to your friends list via the widget; the search is possible via platform or EA username.
