Back then, Final Fight, Double Dragon, Streets of Rage, and other Brawlers rocked the arcades and home consoles. One ran from left to right, alone or in a row, rowing bad guys and having a lot of fun. Fight'N Rage creates just that joy – with playful means from the deep nineties. And that is wonderful!
It does not always have to be innovative. If you look at the classic arcade genres Shoot-'em-Up, Fighting Game and Beat-'em-Up, especially the sideways scrolling Klopperei lives from their accessibility. Within a few seconds, the player has understood the principle: With the chosen character, you walk through streets and backyards, beat the advancing opponents with blows and kicks and at the end of each stage, you end up with a boss. The story is a marginal note, because it's primarily about playability, variety and graphics. If all of this intertwines, the second, tenth, and twentieth runs are fun too.

Fight'N Rage proves that this old and simple principle can still ignite if one refrains from experiments and observes the above criteria. However, this only succeeds if love and understanding of the genre are available. Fortunately, the developer SebaGamesDev brings both in abundance. Instead of a whole studio behind there is only one man, namely Sebastián García from Uruguay: He is responsible for the design and programming of Fight'N Rage, only the driving rock soundtrack comes from the composer Gonzalo Varela.
Originally the game was released in 2017 via Steam for the PC. This September, Nintendo Switch and Xbox One were added, and since December 3, now on the PlayStation 4 may be beaten. The three ports were handled by BlitWorks' dedicated team, which included Owlboy, Bastion and Wargroove on the home consoles.
Pursuing homage
2-D comic optics, three different playable characters, varied stages and plenty of opponents are the little surprising basic ingredients for Fight'N Rage. Alone or three, you go to kill a wicked general. He of course incites his henchmen, who flatten them with fists, kicks and special attacks. The latter consume of a blue circle of energy that you quickly fill with attacks. If you do not want to wait, you are sacrificing some life energy for a whack or a quick series of attacks.
If you combine your attacks with each other skillfully, the combo counter regularly increases to 30, 40 or 50 hits, which will benefit your score. Even more, this works in co-op mode because you can throw enemies at each other and then beat them through the air. And of course, as is appropriate for the genre, you also take one or the other blow and stab weapon. You'll be patting with punk rats, kung fu monkeys, boxer flies, and other animal mucklings. Their design is often a successful bow to known virtual martial artists of yesteryear. The same applies to the ranks of bosses and stages, who also follow classic patterns. Thanks to switchable graphics filter you can make it all look "old".
Playfully, Fight'N Rage is a true celebration! All actions work exactly, are nicely animated and highlighted with rich sound effects. After a while, you will discover new maneuvers that allow you to fight more variable and effective. In addition, the game is fair in every respect. Although you meet in the course of some tough chunks, but ultimately everything can be solved with a willingness to learn, perseverance and natural skills. Never nail enemies in a corner or land hits that you can not avoid. Reasonable checkpoints were also considered, so you do not have to repeat long distances after death.

Another great motivation is the different routes with different ends that you can experience. This not only promotes new story sequences, but also brings out completely different stages. Sometimes your actions decide how to proceed. It also matters which of the three characters you have chosen. It is worthwhile to change the fighter and keep your eyes open during the action. Even a Game Over is rewarded, because starting from your previously earned points you will receive money that can be used for new costume colors, characters and even game modes. There is neither download content nor Season Pass, but only freispielbare extras – just fantastic!
