Game News Final Fantasy 14 on Nintendo Switch and mobile phones? The FFXIV producer is categorical!
A few weeks before the release of Dawntrail, FFXIV’s next expansion, I was able to play it and speak with Naoki Yoshida, the game’s producer and director. While the title shows that it intends to be active for a decade, it’s also just as likely to be available on new platforms.
In 2024, Final Fantasy XIV will have been active for ten years since its second release in 2013 with A Realm Reborn. While the title already has such longevity, Square Enix’s flagship MMORPG has no plans to stop. Thus, the next expansion, Dawntrail, marks the beginning of a new era for the game that should last at least another decade. A few weeks before the release, we were able to play this new adventure in preview, but also talk to Naoki Yoshida, the director and producer of the game. And one thing is certain: the latter does not hide his ambitions for the future of his title.
A cross-platform goal for FF14
On the occasion of this event dedicated to Dawntrail, we were able to conduct an interview with Naoki Yoshida Frandroid. During this interview our colleague Cassim Montilla came to ask him about the game’s future prospects for platforms on which Final Fantasy XIV is not available. The producer first recalls his ambitions regarding the accessibility of the game:
My original goal for Final Fantasy 14 was for the game to be available on all devices and platforms. What I think is really important then is that no matter what device you log in on, you log into the same world and everyone plays together. That’s my policy.
Despite this good will The availability of Final Fantasy XIV on all media is not guaranteed due to various factors beyond the control of the Director:
The implementation of my policy is a little difficult to implement because each platform has its own regulations and some of their owners have rules that dictate that certain players on a certain platform cannot play with those on other platforms. Therefore, in such a situation, this regulation comes into conflict with my view of things. Unfortunately, if we do not find a solution that allows us to manage this situation, it means that we will not be able to offer our services on this device.
However, Naoki Yoshida would rather be positive for the future and does not hide its ambitions regarding future ports on particularly popular platforms.
Final Fantasy XIV on Nintendo Switch, iOS and Android?
A little later during our interview, The director continues his momentum and clearly expresses his desire for Final Fantasy XIV to be available on absolutely all platformsalso on mobile phones and Nintendo Switch, which are supported, seem to be more complicated than the others:
However, we have spoken to many platform owners and I believe we are finally at a point where we can find a solution for the future. I’m not even talking about years, but I would really like to see Final Fantasy 14 available on all platforms as soon as possible.
Now there are not so many platforms we have to address. (…) So all that’s left are smartphones and Nintendo platforms and I want to make the game available on these media as soon as possible.
. And this dream that I have is something that I really want to achieve and I will do my best to make it happen. That is why I invite you to be patient.
According to the latest rumors It seems that the successor to the Nintendo Switch could be as powerful as a PS4, whose support already supports FFXIV. And then we know that the game can run on a portable medium since we saw it with the Steam Deck, so a port of the game seems credible. On the mobile side, this could be possible thanks to cloud gamingas is already the case with Xbox Game Pass games. Now it remains to be seen how all this would affect controls. One thing is certain: Naoki Yoshida has no shortage of ambition for his title, which could well be available in all media in the coming decade.
