Final Fantasy 14 Online FFXIV is coming to Xbox Series X/S, and yesterday players were surprised to find out that this version of the game will feature a currency called FFXIV Coins, which confused some.

According to Square Enix’s official blog post, FFXIV coins are the currency needed to pay for “service fees and optional item purchases” on the console. Optional items may include various in-game services and items.

Final Fantasy 14 Online finally launches on Xbox on March 21st.

At the moment, we’re not too sure, but we assume the “service fee” is related to the game’s monthly subscription. Square has different subscription levels, depending on the option you choose. For the entry level, you can buy it for 30 days at a time for $12.99, but it limits the number of characters you can have per physical data server. If you choose the Standard Sub, you can purchase 30 days/$14.99, 90 days/$13.99, and 180 days/$12.99.

There are three ways to pay for game time: a credit or debit card, a game time card with a code, or using Square Enix Crysta, a separate currency. This currency can be purchased using payment methods such as debit or credit cards and used as payment for various services, subscriptions, or in-game items.

This is most likely what the FFXIV coins are for, not the crystals. Again, we can’t be 100% sure on this as a full explanation hasn’t been provided as of press time.

FFXIV gold coins are purchased through the Microsoft Store. After purchasing, please go to the in-game store called Mog Station to spend. Alternatively, you can visit the Final Fantasy XIV Online Store to spend your gold. Likewise, FFXIV Coins will only be used for payment when playing games on Xbox Series X/S.

After purchasing coins from the Microsoft Store, you will need to log into the Xbox Series X/S version of FFF14 in order for the coins to be credited to your Square Enix account. You will not be able to use these coins until you log in. You’ll also need to make sure your Xbox and Square Enix accounts are linked.

Since it’s an online game, you’ll also need an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate or Xbox Game Pass Core subscription. Both options provide access to online games that the standard Game Pass subscription does not. Microsoft, like Sony, requires a subscription to play online, but unlike the upcoming Series X/S version, PlayStation users don’t need a PlayStation Plus subscription to play FF14 online – the same as on PC.

The Xbox Series X/S version of Final Fantasy 14 Online will be released on March 21, and Game Pass Ultimate users can use the starter version for free for the first month. It includes the Realm Reborn base game, the first and second expansions Heaven’s Forbidden and Stormblood, and you can play until level 70.
