In addition to its undeniable qualities as a platform game, Astro Bot also gives pride of place to guest appearances of all kinds to trace the history of the PlayStation. But a license is missing.

Astro Bot is a great game for several reasons… First, it’s excellent Platformer 3D, with rope feelings as well Turn on and varied levels, but it is also a unprecedented homage to the PlayStation brand – which will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2024. For the occasion, Team Aobi, developers of Astro Bot, continued the work started in Astro’s Playroom. In the new platform game we find the hardware from Sony, but also – and above all – the heroes who gave the Japanese company’s consoles their heyday.

An unprecedented gallery of heroes

In Astro Bot you play a small robot that crashes on an unknown planet. His ship (a huge PS5) can no longer start and the hero only has to explore the surrounding galaxies to repair his rocket and find his metal compatriots lost in the crash. So Astro has to save within around 80 levels 300 robots, half of which come from major video game franchiseswhether they were created by Sony and whether there was close collaboration with the company. And we find everything, from the newest to the oldest: from God of War to Uncharted to Ape Escape, PaRappa the Rapper or even Metal Gear Solid.

A great absence to be regretted

However, several players have pointed out that something is missing: the Final Fantasy saga. In fact, there is no trace of Cloud from FF7 in Astro Bot, for example, although we found the sword of the hero with blonde curls in Astro’s playroom. Given the Roster from Astro Bot, it’s hard to imagine that Team Asobi forgot to contact Square Enix, the publisher of Final Fantasy, when Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth was released exclusively on PS5 a little earlier in the year.

Apparently, Square would have declined the invitation. Nicolas Doucet, director of Team Asobi, half-heartedly admits this in a recent interview Game file. When asked about the lack of Final Fantasy in Astro Bot, the studio boss replied that it was “difficult” to comment on it: “We really respect each publisher’s choice,” he explains. It’s obvious that Cloud and his gang aren’t immediately there for the platformer of the year. At the end of the year, Astro Bot will welcome Stellar Blade and Helldivers 2 as bots via free DLC. Additional licenses, such as Assassin’s Creed, are expected in the future.
