And there you have it! The Disney+ platform has finally released a first preview of the Alien Earth series and its Xenomorph. A promising new project after Romulus?
The latest alien film, “Romulus,” is a hit, even if it hasn’t made as much money as “Prometheus.” The feature film by Fede Alvarez (Evil Dead – Remake, Don’t breathe) grossed more than $288 million at the worldwide box office against a budget of $80 million. With such a performance, this episode is now the highest-grossing horror film of 2024, ahead of A Quiet Place: Day One. A success that continues on the small screen? We finally have a preview of the Disney+ series, a future murder?
A first teaser for the Alien Earth series on Disney+
While we wait to see if Fede Alvarez will agree to a sequel to Romulus, the Alien saga does not rest. By 2025, we are entitled to the Disney+ series Alien Earth. A new project that will turn licensing habits on their head. For the first time, the story will take place on Earth. “When a mysterious spaceship crashes on Earth, a young woman and a ragtag band of tactical soldiers make a fateful discovery that brings them face to face with the greatest threat on the planet.” Details of the official synopsis of Alien Earth.
The story of “Alien Earth” will therefore, as the title suggests, take place on Earth and will be set decades before Ridley Scott’s original film. What else can you expect? Of young people who are in danger of being massacred by at least one Xenomorph, as the first video teaser for the Disney Plus series shows. When HR Giger’s great creature returns, it won’t be quite the focus of the action. Of course, it will be there, but showrunner Noah Hawley (Fargo) wanted to go in a different direction.
“Like I actually did with Legion. The idea was to say: let’s take the superheroes out of the show and see if it’s still a great show. If we took ‘Aliens’ out of an alien series, what would the show be about? What are the themes, who are the characters and what is the human drama behind it? Then we brought the aliens back in and it’s great: not only is there a great human drama, but there are aliens in it too!”
A great cast
So much for the first look at Alien Earth, which may give you goosebumps or a feeling of fear when the Xenomorph appears. Like Romulus, don’t expect to see Sigourney Weaver reprise her role as Ripley. The main character Wendy, who has the body of an adult but the consciousness of a child, is played by Sydney Chandler (gun, Not Worry, darling…). Timothy Oyphant (Justified) will play Kirsh, a synth who is Wendy’s mentor.
In the cast we also have Essie Davis (game of Thrones, The Babadook) for the role of Dame Silvia, Adarsh Gourav (The White Tiger) as Slightly, and Alex Lawther and Samuel Blenkin, who will be CJ (a soldier) and Boy Kavalier (a CEO), respectively. We don’t know if the Alien Earth series will be a success and of high quality, but given Noah Hawley’s resume, it’s worth keeping a very close eye on. Barring a very cold reception, the showrunner has several seasons in mind.
