First competitive graphics card from China delivers 100 FPS in 4K, but not in Triple-A

card, China, Competitive, delivers, FPS, graphics, tripleA

Just a few days ago we reported on a new graphics card from China that would like to take on the RTX 3000 and RX 6000. However, we strongly doubted that the manufacturer Moore Threads, which was only founded in 2020, could do this without having seen any real benchmark comparisons.

Now, however, is a first and, above all, very revealing test of the flagship MTT S80 appeared. Thanks at this point to the colleagues of the Chinese website Expreviewwho apparently received a sample. And in fact, the MTT S80 can crack the 100 frames per second mark in some games even in 4K. But not in triple-A titles. Is it still enough for the RTX 3060? What it is definitely not enough for is the RTX 4080 from the following test:

More info.

Ok, we don’t really want to keep you in suspense for too long, but before we get to the benchmark results, let’s take a look at the quite interesting specifications:

model production Nuclear clock speed (boost) Storage
MTT S80 7nm 4.096 1.800 MHz 16,0 GB GDDR6 (14,0 Gbps)
RTX 3060 8nm 3.584 1.777 MHz 12,0 GB GDDR6 (15,0 Gbps)

In addition to the normal FP32 processing units, the MTT S80 also has tensor cores, as we know them from Nvidia and the AI upscaler DLSS. It seems that Moore is also planning threads with a similar solution. The emphasis here is on plant, because in the test of Expreview there is nothing to see so far. But we’re excited to see what’s to come in the future.

benchmarks in games

First the positives: In League of Legends, the MTT S80 achieves 128 FPS in 4K resolution and the highest detail setting. It also delivers close to or even more than 100 FPS in 4K in some other competitive titles popular in China, such as Cross Fire and Street Fighter IV. However, these are not real graphics chunks, but rather games that are not very demanding for a GPU.

Comparison with RTX 3060

Expreview doesn’t provide a direct comparison in games, but it does provide all sorts of theoretical benchmarks. Here is a clear, if somewhat mixed picture: In Furmark 1080p, for example, the MTT S80 delivers 96 FPS, while the RTX 3060 comes to 181 FPS. According to this, the MTT S80 would be about half as fast as the Nvidia model.

In 3DMark06, on the other hand, it lags far behind. There it delivers 22,247 versus 58,611 points in 1080p and only 19,364 versus 49,701 points in 4K. The differences in Unigine Valley v1.0 are even clearer:

Depending on the mode used (1080p DX9, 4K DX9, 1080p DX11, or 4K DX11), the RTX 3060 is between about 2x and 7.5x faster.

This is how we rate the MTT S80

Despite the almost expected large gap to Nvidia’s RTX 3060, in our opinion Moore Threads made a surprisingly good start with the MTT S80. This is all the more astonishing considering that the company is only two years old and will not be able to compete with Nvidia, AMD and Intel in terms of development experience and probably also financial background.

In order to be able to attack the top dogs in the high-end segment like the RTX 4080 from the tests linked below, it will certainly take a few years and many hurdles to be overcome.

What do you say about the MTT S80? Do you think Moore Threads can take on Nvidia and AMD any time soon? Write it to us in the comments!
