Will the new Nvidia generation come later than expected because of too many current models?

Rumors about the release of Nvidia’s new RTX 4000 generation are currently piling up. In addition to the order of the various models such as the RTX 4090, RTX 4080 and RTX 4070, the exact point in time is also important. According to information from Videocardz.com Unspecified sources expect that the release could be postponed due to high RTX 3000 stocks.

The current plan provides that first the Geforce RTX 4090 im August appears, then the Geforce RTX 4080 im Septemberfollowed by the Geforce RTX 4070 in October. But Nvidia’s board partners could stand in the way, as it says:

Our sources expect some of the dates to change again because AIBs still have large inventories of RTX 3000 cards, and the last thing they want is for Nvidia to announce a new generation.

The abbreviation AIB stands for Add-in-Board and means manufacturers like Asus, Gigabyte and MSI, who buy Nvidia GPUs in order to install them on their own circuit boards and sell them as a complete graphics card package with cooler and so on.

What’s with the rumours?

Both dealer stocks and prices for the current RTX 3000 cards have indeed improved significantly over the past few weeks and months. There are many possible reasons for this, such as falling cryptocurrency prices, less negative effects on production from the corona pandemic and generally lower demand.

High stocks of models of a current generation of graphics cards before the release of a new generation should not be a fundamentally new situation. In addition, the previous rumors strongly suggest that Nvidia is on schedule with the production of the new RTX 4000 cards in order to comply with the last usual release rhythm of two years.

Our assessment: We don’t assume that too many RTX 3000 models will cause major delays in the release of the upcoming RTX 4000 generation – at least not in the form of a rather short-term postponement, which should also entail logistical difficulties.

On the other hand, it would be more conceivable that there has long been a plan to sell the RTX 3000 generation alone over a longer period of time than usual and to postpone the RTX 4000 release to 2023. There was evidence pointing to such a strategy about a year ago.

However, the various recent rumors that have repeatedly assumed a release at the end of 2022 do not fit in with this. We therefore consider a release in autumn to be the more likely option, as most recently expected, also in view of possible new competition from AMD’s RX-7000 generation.

RTX 3000 as a cheaper option?

Even if it is not yet clear how much faster the new graphics cards from AMD and Nvidia will be, the prices for old models should drop noticeably as a result of their release.

Even if it is not yet clear how much faster the new graphics cards from AMD and Nvidia will be, the prices for old models should drop noticeably as a result of their release.

At the same time, from the player’s point of view, regardless of the exact release period, it can be expected that the current graphics cards will be an attractive option for new purchases if they continue to drop in price due to the release of the next generation. The new models could bring a big leap in performance:

Unrivaled performance sound barrier to be broken by new gaming graphics cards

But not all players need that much performance. In addition, the cost of graphics cards is still high. This potentially makes RTX 3000 models, which will be significantly cheaper with the RTX 4000 release, a good deal.

How do you assess the situation? Could too large stocks of current RTX 3000 graphics cards really cause a delay in the release of the RTX 4000 models? Or do you think that is very unlikely? Let us know in the comments!
