WIT Studio and Netflix have released the first images of The One Piece, the remake of the anime series. A work that will be closer to the style of Eiichiro Oda.
The popularity of the One Piece license is at its peak. After the release of Netflix’s live-action series, manga sales exploded around the world. Naturally, many newcomers flocked to the anime and its roughly 1,100 episodes to find out what happens next. Many ultimately encountered a major obstacle. After two decades on the service, most of the episodes have aged particularly poorly. An observation that Netflix hopes to remedy by employing WIT Studio (Attack on TitanSeasons 1 to 3, Spy x Family) to create a remake of the One Piece anime. Few details have been known so far, but as promised, the next series was talked about in detail during OP Days with several concept images and information.
First pictures of One Piece Remake
In December 2023, Netflix announced with great fanfare the start of production on a remake of the One Piece anime. An ambitious project entrusted to WIT Studio, known for its impeccable work on the first three seasons of Attack on Titan. Although the project only really started a few months ago, it has been talked about internally for four to five years. On the occasion of One Piece Days, Netflix and the animation studio unveiled a behind-the-scenes look at this project, entrusted to Masashi Koizuka, director of the One Piece remake who held a similar post on the Attack on Titan series. He will be closely accompanied by Kyoji Asana (AOT, Spy Family), in charge of animation and character design.
Of course, the first challenge for the teams was to find a visual style that fits the work and remains timeless enough not to suffer the same fate as the current anime. Several possibilities were considered, several tests were carried out and many of them were thrown in the trash. Ultimately, it is the one that is closer to the hand of Eiichiro Oda, the creator of the manga, who has also changed a lot over the years. We will have to wait to see the final result, but WIT Studio and Netflix have revealed their vision through numerous concept drawings that indicate the direction that will be taken for this remake of One Piece. And it is really in full swing.
Two animes in parallel
” Jhe considers it a long series. If the audience likes what we have created, I know we will be doing it for the long haul. And if so, that means our work is loved by many. I want to continue it for a very long time, I want to continue it forever “, said Masashi Koizuka about The One Piece, the official name of the remake. The documentary also recalls that the current anime produced by Toei will continue to air in parallel. The two projects coexist: one aims to rediscover the first adventures of Luffy and his friends, the other the most recent. For now, no release window has been announced, so be patient, but we can’t wait to see this vision in animation.
