If you are a fan of Middle Earth and have lost count of the number of times you have seen the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the film The War of the Rohirrim is for you. If, in addition, you are obsessed with everything that has to do with Japanese animation, you will be amazed by its first trailer. Forewarned is forearmed.
Based on one of the appendices written by JRR Tolkien himself, author of the novels and creator of the fantasy universe and its languages, The War of the Rohirrim reunites the talents of New Line Cinema’s producers and writers to recount the glorious battle that established Helm himself as one of the greatest kings in the history of Rohan.
Of course, as you will see, in The War of the Rohirrim the king who gave his name to Helm’s Deep, the fortress that protected the Rohirrim from the forces of Saruman in The Two Towerswill be a main character, but the protagonist will be his daughter Héra, played by Gaia Wise.
To put it in context, The War of the Rohirrim takes place in the same Middle-earth imagined for Peter Jackson’s films. That is to say, there are no direct connections to The Rings of Power. The narration is provided by Miranda Otto herself, who reprises her role as Eowyn, and everything that will be seen in the film takes place approximately 200 years before the War of the Ringor portraying the great war between the people of Rohan and the Dunledins.
However, and this is essential, both the aesthetics and the way of telling the events will be in anime style courtesy of the director. Kenji Kamiyama (the animes of Ghost in the Shell, Blade Runner: Black Lotus o Star Wars: Visions) while the animation will be signed by Sola Entertainment, to whom we owe since the episodes of the Rick and Morty anime.
Both Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh serve as executive producers for The War of the Rohirrimwhich is a guarantee that they know both Middle Earth and Tolkien’s works very well. On the other hand, it has been produced by both New Line Cinema and Warner Animation with the approval and participation of Middle Earth Enterprises. And despite the fact that everything is born from extending a very specific extract from the appendices, what has been shown already points to ways for its release.
It is expected that The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim hit theaters around the world starting on December 13, 2024. A very well calculated date: in addition to coinciding with the releases of Jackson’s films, it stands out from the premiere of the second season of The Rings of Power from Amazon Prime Video, which will be at the end of August, and also ahead of Warner’s new projects to relaunch the franchise. Given what we’ve seen… You can count on my sword!
