Just a few months after its launch, Foamstars is switching to a free-to-play model. Square Enix has now officially announced this.
At the beginning of February this year, Square Enix released the colorful shooter Foamstars exclusively on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, which is most comparable to the successful Splatoon on the Switch. Just a few months later, there is now a fundamental change to the previous business model: Foamstars will be using a free-to-play model in the future.
Square Enix and Sony announced the decision today, Tuesday. Accordingly, Foamstars will be available to play for free on Sony consoles starting October 4, 2024.
Anyone who has purchased the paid version or still does so will receive the so-called “Legacy Gift” as compensation. This includes 12 exclusive color variants of the Bubble Beastie skin, an exclusive slide board design and a legacy title.
With the switch to the free-to-play model comes another change: an active PS Plus membership will no longer be necessary to play the then free multiplayer game online against other gamers.
