If you’ve been following the Paris Olympics lately, and consider yourself a big fan of action role-playing games over the past few years, then last night’s synchronized swimming competition may have made your ears prick up. That’s because the Japanese team participating in the event decided to pair their performance with a song from NieR: Automata.
As viewers noticed last night, Japan’s artistic swimming performance was paired with a beautiful song from the game’s official soundtrack. After this was posted on Twitter, OST vocalist Emi Evans and Yoko Taro himself also took notice, both of whom expressed their appreciation for the Olympic cameo.

Japan ultimately finished fourth, missing out on a medal by six points. Still, it was a great match to watch. Come for Neil’s soundtrack, stay for the sports! The winners of this match were China, followed by the United States in silver and Europe in bronze.
Each team consists of eight swimmers who must swim in unison following a routine choreographed to music, and are given points based on the complexity of the routine, the technicality of the performance, the transitions between the various movements, etc. After the performance, the judges will score each team to determine their final ranking.

This is by no means the first time an Olympic athlete has shown a fondness for video games. The much-loved American pommel horse athlete was revealed to be a fan of Rocket League, while Spanish bronze medalist Pau Echaniz lost two League of Legends ranked matches before winning his prize, leading gold medalist Noah Lyles to reveal his love for Rift Rising.
