A few days ago, everyone got their first look at some gameplay from Dragon Age: Keeper of the Veil, and now, former series head David Gaider got a chance to watch the game’s reveal. What did he think? Overall, very positive.

Although we saw a trailer for the game during last weekend’s Xbox showcase (shortly after the game was renamed from Dreadwolf to Veilguard), many fans were a little disappointed with the debut of Bioware’s in-development game. The gameplay also sparked some mixed reactions, but overall it seems to have received more positive reviews than its peers.

In a rather lengthy Twitter thread, Gaider, a key creative figure in the series from its inception until the conclusion of The Judgment, gave his thoughts on the 20-minute-long segment.

“Overall, I think this trailer is more compelling than the teaser,” he began. “We got to see a bit of the story, and the game is a bit darker and more DA-esque in terms of tone.” He did pick out some things that fans didn’t like, though, saying: “The stylized characters take some getting used to, but the art style of Dragon Age changes with every game, so it’s nothing new. The combat is more action-oriented and doesn’t have any tactical elements, but it looks good. The style isn’t too different from the combat in Dragon Age 2.”

One thing that struck Gaider as awe-inspiring — in a positive way — was the amount of environmental work on display. “Seeing the sprawl of Minrathous — wow,” he mused. “I wish we could do something like this for Kirkwall or even Val Royeaux. It’s gorgeous, shows breadth and tone, such great work.” He also said he “couldn’t help but smile” when he saw the dialogue icons for Dragon Age 2 appear in it.

On the story front, the developer added: “Nice to see Solas and get some hints about what’s coming next. Could probably ramble on about the fallout from Days 3 and how that aligns (or doesn’t) with where I think the story is going… but I won’t.” Gaider then ended a great post by saying he “can’t wait to see where the story goes” and congratulating the developers at Bioware on a job well done, which is also great.
