EA’s former NBA Street developer has left the video game giant to form his own studio to create a spiritual sequel to the beloved basketball game. Called The Run: Got Next, the game will be developed at the new Play by Play Studios. The game itself will be released on Steam, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S in 2025.

At the game’s announcement, Play by Play Studios co-founder and former Madden creative director Mike Young revealed to IGN the developer’s approach to NBA Street Legacy. “A lot of us who worked on NBA Street have always wanted to bring that game back. I think it’s difficult for a company with a hit game like Madden or NBA Live. If you put all your resources into that, I think it would be challenging to think about developing a secondary game,” Young said.

“When Tiburon Studio relaunched [NFL Blitz]…Some of the things I’ve seen in the past are just nostalgia games that haven’t evolved into modern games. I don’t think they have staying power, so they have to be launched at a lower price. You might just get people who like them and then they’ll play them for a weekend or a few weeks or once in a while…”

Yang continued: “We think the opportunity is to bring this type of game to Gen Z that doesn’t necessarily already exist, it’s social. Play with friends, play against friends. We’re trying to adapt to what simulation games can’t give us. Modes like Superstar KO are one-offs. We want to make the best version we can and make this a real game.”

It’s been a long time since we’ve played a basketball game as good as NBA Streets. It’s been a long time since we’ve seen a game as well-loved as NBA Streets, and let’s be honest, the younger generation just can’t get to experience it! Here’s to hoping The Run, made with Unreal Engine 5, does well!
