News culture “Free to do as they please”: This iconic SF series is back with a just-confirmed reboot, albeit without the creator of the original saga
A pillar of ’90s sci-fi programming, this brilliant series will return in the form of a reboot.
In 1993, the public discovered The X-Files, a series that had become the flagship series for science fiction fans and the charismatic duo David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson. The show, created by Chris Carter, invited us to follow the fascinating investigations of FBI special agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, who are responsible for handling X-rated files, unsolved cases involving all kinds of paranormal phenomena goes. Completely obsessed with the paranormal, Murder also searches for his sister Samantha, who disappeared under mysterious circumstances when she was younger.
The absolutely iconic series has won three Golden Globes for Best Drama Series in 1995, 1997 and 1998, as well as Golden Globes for Best Actress in a Drama Series and Best Actor in a Drama Series for Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny in 1997, among others. Currently, you can still watch it on the Disney+ platform with a subscription. And if you’ve already binged all the episodes and want more good news (at least we hope), a reboot is coming.
The creator of The X-Files gives his blessing
The X-Files creator Chris Carter recently gave Ryan Coogler his blessing for the reboot of his beloved series. However, in The Wrap columns he admits that he will not be involved in the project:
I won’t be involved. Only as a supporter. You don’t need my blessing. 20th Century Fox and Disney own the series. They are free to do whatever they want with it. I am honored that they came to me and asked not for my permission but for my blessing.
And to add that Coogler likes “Have a diverse cast” and has “Good ideas” for the restart, the contents of which are still kept secret. The series reboot was accidentally announced in March 2023 (Chris Carter revealed it during a podcast interview) and doesn’t have a release window yet. For those who don’t know him, Ryan Coogler made his first feature film in 2013 with Fruitvale Station, a film that chronicled the last 24 hours of Oscar Grant (played by Michael B. Jordan), a young African-American man In 2009, a police officer turned his back on him. Two years later, he directed the Rocky spin-off Creed, which signed a new collaboration with Michael B. Jordan. In 2016, he directed “Black Panther” and then the sequel “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.”
When asked about the possibility of tackling a reboot himself, Chris Carter said he would be open to the idea if two of the original series’ main stars were involved: “Oh, if David and Gillian wanted to do it again. Yes, probably, then I would be inspiredAccording to him, the duo is probably one of the main reasons for the series’ success: “Without that relationship and without the actors who played Mulder and Scully, the series would not have had the success that it did. She knew it.”
