“Dune: Prophecy” is about the Bene Gesserit, who use their magical abilities in the “Dune” universe. But Desmond Hart gets in their way. We’ll explain to you who he is.
The sci-fi series “Dune: Prophecy” is about the Bene Gesserit sisterhood, which existed in the “Dune” universe 10,000 years before the rise of Paul Atreides. They use their special abilities to fight against threats to humanity and to expand their influence among the ruling families.
But in the HBO series a very mysterious character appears right from the start, namely Desmond Hart, who is played by “Vikings” star Travis Fimmel. Find out with us what role the inconspicuous soldier plays in “Dune: Prophecy”!
Dune: Prophecy: Vikings star plays an enemy of the Sisterhood
Desmond Hart appears in the first episode of “Dune: Prophecy” and is initially very reminiscent of Duncan Idaho (Jason Momoa), who we already know from the “Dune” films. Because just like the brave fighter and supporter of Duke Leto, he knows his way around the desert planet Arrakis very well.
But unlike Idaho, Desmond Hart is not yet known from the numerous “Dune” books. This makes his origins a mystery even for “Dune” book connoisseurs. In the series we learn that he is one of the few survivors of an attack on Arrakis. When he appears in the Imperial Palace on Selusa Secundus, he blames allies of the Empire.
Desmond Hart also doesn’t shy away from speaking to Emperor Javicco Corrino’s (Mark Strong) conscience and warning him about an alliance with House Richese. In this way, Desmond works against the plan of the Bene Gesserit, who support the marriage of Pruwet Richese and Princess Ynez, as Ynez is trained as part of the sisterhood.
In addition, Desmond Hart has magical powers that allow him to burn the skin of his opponents, such as those of Pruwet Richese and the fortune teller Kasha. Does that make him a dangerous villain in Dune: Prophecy? He kills the young Pruwet Richese to prevent the planned marriage between Pruwet and Princess Ynez Corrino.
His actions indicate that he wants to thwart the Sisterhood’s plans, particularly Valya Harkonnen. His goal appears to be to prevent the Sisterhood from controlling the Empire, making him a significant antagonist in the series.
