Future users of a Samsung Galaxy S23 may hit storage limits sooner than they would like. The reason for this is probably not just the consumption of the installed One UI 5.1 version based on Android 13.
According to the Android Authority website the operating system, including the pre-installed apps, requires a whopping 60 GB of memory, which is four times the Android version on the Pixel 7. Even Windows 11 from Microsoft doesn’t use up as much memory on the hard drive.
In view of this problem, buyers of a 128 GB version will only be able to claim half of the storage capacity for themselves. What is the reason for this massive utilization?
Galaxy S23 memory consumption – How does 60 GB come about?
There is probably a well-known culprit for this immense memory usage: bloatware. According to the report linked above, Samsung appears to be equipping the operating system with a number of Google apps that are cloned separately.
What is bloatware? Bloatware is unwanted software (apps) that come preinstalled on your devices such as smartphones, laptops, and computers. In addition to the bloated storage space, it can also have an impact on the battery life and the performance of the device in the worst case.
As a result, you probably have two collections of the same apps installed on your smartphone. What Samsung wants to achieve with this is still unclear to us. Android Authority assumes that Samsung wants to give the impression of a full-fledged ecosystem. The fact is that the South Korean manufacturer is obliged to install Google’s own applications on its devices.
In addition to the search engine giant’s apps, Samsung sells the space on their devices to other developers like Meta (formerly Facebook), which again drives up storage usage.
It is still unclear whether the unwanted apps on the device can be removed in order to reduce the memory requirements of the operating system. As soon as the first test devices are available and we can take a close look at the problem, we will of course update this article for you.
