The corona virus still has a firm grip on the world. Today, the federal and state governments in Germany gave advice again and largely extended the exit restrictions until the beginning of May. In addition, further decisions were made that have a direct impact on gamescom 2020.
The organizers of gamescom had previously emphasized almost like a prayer wheel to continue planning the fair, even if the world is currently changing completely due to the corona virus and several game events have also been canceled. However, Koelnmesse is now forced to act. Reason: The Federal Government announced today not only an extension of the exit restrictions until the beginning of May, but prohibited major events in Germany up to and including August 31, 2020.
This means that there can be no classic gamescom this year – at least not in the planned time slot in August. In the meantime, Koelnmesse and Spieleverband game have reacted to the decision of the federal and state governments and made a first statement:
"Even if not all details are currently known, the nationwide ban on major events will also affect the planning for gamescom 2020 by the end of August. Furthermore, gamescom 2020 will take place digitally! We will provide further information shortly. "
Since there is obviously no postponement of the trade fair and it is not foreseeable anyway how the ban on major events may continue after August 31, in view of the above statement it can now be considered certain that gamescom 2020 will probably be will only exist in any digital form. We'll keep you up to date!
