The game association has once again published market data based on the GfK Consumer Panels, keeping an eye on the shares of the platforms and their sales.
Based on GfK market data, the game association has broken down the distribution of game platforms in Germany. Unsurprisingly, the smartphone is again at the top with 22.8 million gamers, even if the numbers are slightly down on the previous year.
Second place is secured by consoles such as Playstation, Xbox and Switch, which have increased significantly compared to the previous year. 18.9 million people gamble on the consoles – 1.1 million more than in the previous year, which may be due to the better availability of the new consoles, among other things. The PC had to suffer some losses and dropped by 1.4 million gamers to only 12.9 million PC gamers.
Tablets remain in fourth place after a strong spell during the pandemic, but the number of gamers has dropped to 10.2 million. And even if the smartphone is almost unassailable in front, at least 16.6 million mobile gamers are also gambling on consoles and PCs at the same time.
When it comes to sales of video games, the smartphone is also ahead with 2.8 billion dollars in 2022, followed by the consoles with 2 billion and the PC with still 1.6 billion. The nature of the transactions shows major differences. On smartphones, almost all sales are generated via in-app purchases, on PCs it is a surprising 70 percent and on consoles only 29 percent. On the other hand, console sales are dominated by direct game purchases (41 percent) and online services such as subscriptions (31 percent).
