Contrary to expectations, with Gears of War E-Day, The Coalition decided not to narrate the rest of the fifth opus, and explained the reasons for this surprising narrative choice.
Before it was announced with great fanfare at the Xbox Games Showcase, we were following Gears 6 with some excitement. In its place came Gears of War E-Day, surprising fans, but certainly not without some excitement. According to The Coalition, this new game under the legendary Xbox license will not be just a simple prequel.
Gears of War E-Day or the longest day
It wasn’t Kait Diaz who gave fans of the franchise a masterful graphic slap at the end of the Xbox conference as part of Summer Game Fest 2024. Instead, they reconnected with good old Marcus Fenix, with much fewer wrinkles, scars and white hair. Gears of War E-Day sets its action 14 years before the events of the very first work, released 18 years ago on Xbox 360 (yes, already …). As its name suggests, it will trace the famous catastrophe that was the day of the creation of Terra, when the locusts emerged from Earth to exterminate humanity.
However, this term does not tell the whole truth about the story of Gears of War E-Day, says Matt Sercy, Creative Director of The Coalition, in an interview with GamesRadar+. In fact, the title tells us its story over “several days” and not just 24 hours. However, the focus is on Emergence Day, which we will experience from the point of view of its various participants. In addition to Marcus Fenix we could therefore possibly witness this terrible catastrophe at the head of Dominic Santiago or possibly Damon Baird, Cole Train, Colonel Hoffman or even Anya Stroud, to name a few.
A story that lets us experience its most terrible moment
Matt Sercy also confirmed some details from The Coalition about Gears of War E-Day. This is indeed intended to clearly highlight the threatening and terrifying side of the Locust invasion. While we didn’t pay too much attention to the drones in the previous works, in this new work they will be much more impressive. We could also see this in the trailer, which was created using assets from the game under Unreal Engine 5. Marcus engages in a terribly brutal fight against a single drone, despite it being a simple soldier of the Locust army.
So it won’t be a complete massacre like in the old games, but a deep battle, at any time. A different orientation that also fits well with the fact that before Emergence Day, no one had heard of the Locusts. Both the army and the civilian population therefore don’t know how to deal with such a monstrous invasion in various ways. In any case, the program looks extremely promising for fans of the franchise and could even attract others put off by the exuberant side of the old installments. The icing on the cake: Gears of War E-Day could arrive sooner than you think. Namely in 2025 on PC, Xbox Series and Xbox Game Pass. To be sure, however, we will have to wait for official confirmation from the United Governments Coalition.
