Gears of War was undoubtedly one of the early games that helped shape the Xbox, and given the original game’s 16th anniversary, it’s been revealed that it’s being adapted by Netflix into a feature film and an animated series.

If you haven’t tried the game, watch the trailer for the latest Gears of War mainline game, Gears of War 5, here.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix has acquired media rights and partnered with developer The Coalition on these projects.

Since 2007 alone, there have been some attempts to adapt Gears of War. Both New Line and Universal have tried, but ultimately to no avail. Over time, the IP itself has changed hands since it was first owned by Epic Games, with the IP and developer The Coalition currently owned by Microsoft.

Currently, neither of Netflix’s two Gears of War projects have names. After the success of Arcane & Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, I had high hopes that an animated series would do well, as for another video game movie? I’m not sure.

Gears of War is a sci-fi game about a planet, Sera, facing social collapse at the hands of alien creatures from deep underground. Of course, when it falls apart further at the same time, it’s up to the protagonist to try to save society. Let’s just say, if done right, this story could be made into a compelling movie.

It’s now a waiting game to see who will actually be involved in these projects, and as for any rumored release times, there’s no telling. Alas, it’s all in the hands of Netflix now, and it’s interesting that its head of film, Scott Stuber, was also involved in Universal’s adaptation as an independent producer not long ago.

What do you think of the Gears of War feature film and animated series? Sounds good, or do you think Hollywood should just leave it alone?
