Fans can currently enjoy “Godzilla Minus One” on Netflix. The Japanese monster film is in the top 10 of the streaming service and has delighted many fans. The film is set shortly after World War II and deals with the threat posed by the enormous lizard to the Japanese people.
In contrast to many other film adaptations of recent years, the metaphor that Godzilla actually stands for is made clearer here: the destructive power of nuclear war and the fear of it after Hiroshima and Nagasaki. “Godzilla Minus One” is the 37th “Godzilla” film.
While other films have titles that are much more banal, such as “Shin Godzilla” (“The Divine Godzilla”), the title of “Godzilla Minus One” is not quite so easy to translate. We’ll tell you the meaning of the title.
Godzilla Minus One: Even worse than zero point
The title “Godzilla Minus One” refers to the situation in Japan after World War II. Two atomic bombs were dropped by the USA, one on Nagasaki and one on Hiroshima, and the country was at ground zero. The economy had to be rebuilt after the war, and many people were traumatized. Up to 3 million Japanese lost their lives during the Second World War.
The “minus” in the title is the emergence of Godzilla in the 1940s and the terror he spreads while Japan is at zero and even worse. Godzilla thus takes Japan from zero to a minus one.
Unlike films like “Godzilla x Kong,” in which Godzilla stands for something good, Godzilla in “Godzilla Minus One” is actually a destructive force that is not heroized. He brings disaster and destruction, and the fear he triggers is more than evident in the post-war Japan shown in the film.
At the 2023 Oscars, “Godzilla Minus One” won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects. With a budget of $10-12 million, the film beat out Marvel productions that had 20 times the budget.
