Do you like survival horror with a third-person perspective? Then you should take a quick look at the GOG store. With Daymare 1998 there is a declaration of love for the genre, but above all Resident Evil is a gift and therefore completely free.
However, please note: The clock is ticking. Daymare 1998 is only being given away on GOG for a few hours, so hurry up. In addition, the horror game is not entirely immune to problems and will test your patience, more on that below.
Incidentally, the real Resident Evil will soon continue: On March 24, 2023, the remake of part 4 will be released, which recently presented its graphic splendor in the new trailer. We were already able to try the return of handsome Leon S. Kennedy, you can find out more about this in our detailed preview:

What kind of game is Daymare 1998 anyway?
With Daymare 1998, the inspiration is obvious. The developers of the indie studio Invader pay tribute to the survival horror genre and especially to Resident Evil 2. In other words: We look over the shoulders of different protagonists and use all kinds of weapons to defend ourselves against zombies and other undead shit.

Daymare 1998 – Release trailer for the former Resident Evil 2 fan project
Daymare 1998 suffers from a few problems, however. This is how the game comes up Metacritic just to an average of 62 points Steam user ratings vary between mostly positive
and balanced
. Even our GamePro colleague and horror lover Kai Schmidt can’t ignore the stumbling blocks and deficits of Daymare 1998 and gives up in his test a rating of 59 points.
But where are the problems anyway? Daymare 1998 struggles with spongy controls, sometimes unfair fights and technical problems. With the … mixed dubbing, one could still argue that they are at least reminiscent of the trashy speakers of the original Resident Evil. Daymare 1998’s replay value is also limited, while a few design choices raise eyebrows.
But Daymare 1998 also has a certain charm. The survival horror experience of the small indie studio Invader is of course anything but perfect, but shines in the areas of atmosphere, background music, puzzles in the best old school manner and varied monster designs.
In addition, Daymare 1998 is bursting with allusions to cross-references to old horror or film and cinema classics. Daymare 1998 is not for every type of player and not for every horror fan – but if you like Resident Evil, you should at least take a look.
