news hardware Google is ringing in the AirPods Pro door with its new high-end wireless headphones
Google attacks the high-end market of wireless headphones with its Pixel Buds Pro, with noise cancellation and a very interesting announced autonomy.
Google’s new Pixel Buds Pro
During the Google I/O there are not only software announcements and with good reason we were able to attend the presentation of the Pixel 6a and the Pixel Watch, but also the Pixel Buds Pro.
Google is expanding its product line to develop its ecosystem, and these Pixel Buds Pro are another brick in the building. These are true wireless headphones with a design close to the classic Pixel Buds A.
The expected feature in wireless headphones at this price point is active noise cancellation. This is a method of reducing external noise interference by picking it up to transmit the reversed sound into the headphones to cancel it out. All of this is done in real-time to block out noise before it reaches the user’s ears.
Active reduction may not be perfectly effective depending on the shape of each ear, as the tips do not always provide perfect isolation. Google therefore promises that its ANC (active noise-cancelling) will be able to compensate for losses to offer optimal reduction.
It is complicated to integrate this technology effectively on such small objects compared to a helmet. So we’re waiting to be able to pick it up (in the ear, rather) to get an idea of what it looks like.
Features already known, but for less than the AirPods Pro
Just like the AirPods Pro, Google is adding a transparency mode, has become an integral part in recent years. If you activate this option, the headphones send out ambient noise instead of canceling it out in order to hear conversations and what surrounds us clearly.
For calls, Google promises ambient noise cancellation so your voice can be heard clearly.
The total autonomy (with charging case) is 31 hours without noise reduction and up to 20 hours with ANC activated. It’s not bombastic, but Google advertises up to 7 hours of ANC for each earbud on a single charge, compared to 4.5 hours for the AirPods Pro.
No spatial audio yet, but it should come a little later.
Google announces a lower introductory price than the AirPods Pro: $219 compared to $279 for Apple headphones. Pre-orders begin in July, and four colors are available: white, black, orange, and green.
