The “Gossip Girl” reboot of the hit teen series from the 2000s is being canceled after only 2 seasons. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the end, as showrunner Joshua Safran reveals.

  • The 2021 “Gossip Girl” reboot will be canceled after just two seasons.
  • The reason is probably the restructuring of Warner Bros. Discovery and the resulting end for the streaming service HBO Max.
  • However, showrunner Joshua Safran wants to try to continue his series on another streaming platform.

The “Gossip Girl” no longer spreads rumors so quickly. Showrunner Joshua Safran announces the end of his reboot of the popular teen series from the 2000s on his Instagram account. After only two seasons, it’s XOXO for Audrey, Zoya, Julien and Co.

Safran does not give an exact reason for the cancellation of “Gossip Girl”. However, it can be assumed very strongly that the merger of the media groups WarnerMedia and Discovery Inc. is responsible for this.

Due to the restructuring of the company to Warner Bros. Discovery, the streaming service HBO Max in the USA will be scrapped. This means that numerous series of the platform are sold. “Gossip Girl” will also have fallen victim to this.

In an official statement released by HBO Max to US magazine “Entertainment Weekly“, the streamer just thanks for the good work with the team behind “Gossip Girl”.

We are very grateful to Josh Safran, Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz for bringing us back to the Upper East Side and all the scandals of Constance Billiards. While there won’t be a third season of Gossip Girl, thanks for the alluring love triangle, calculated sneakiness, and impeccable fashion that brought this show to new audiences.

HBO Max on the ending of ‘Gossip Girl’

As far as showrunner Safran is concerned, however, we don’t have to say goodbye to the Gossip Girls forever. As he further reveals in his post, his team is currently looking for a new home for his show.

Attempts to continue a series with another streaming service are often unsuccessful. We shouldn’t get our hopes too high.

The “Gossip Girl” reboot was commissioned by HBO Max in 2019 and coming to the streaming service in 2021. Unlike the original series, which aired on The CW from 2007 to 2012, the reboot already reveals who the “Gossip Girl” is. So this question does not remain unanswered.

The finale of the second and currently final season of the series will be released on January 26, 2023 on HBO Max. In Germany, the “Gossip Girl” reboot can be viewed on RTL+.
