If you have a spare cool mill somewhere and want to add to your console collection, you might want to check out an eBay listing.
Since cartridges are available in limited print runs, or because some consoles and peripherals aren’t powerful enough to warrant mass production, the video game world offers a fair amount of rare collectibles, so there are plenty of collectors who like to build personal libraries. Recently, an eBay listing (found by Consolevariations.com) featured an impressive collection of around 2,400 different consoles. All the seller wants is $984,000, or about $1 million, or £850,000.
The auction does look impressive. The images show the Japanese and (presumably) European versions of the Pokemon-themed N64, burnt orange GameCube, PSP Go, and more. In all seriousness, this is a ridiculously large collectible and honestly probably worth the asking price. The user in question, kariaure, even shared their favorite videos on their YouTube channel, showcasing a wide variety of Sega consoles, Game Boys, and more.
One video even shows their collection from 2010, about 12 years ago, when they only had 1,500 consoles, which means they’ve destroyed another thousand different consoles in the meantime.
According to Google Translate, the seller has been collecting since the early 1990s, noting that the collection back then was less important than it is now. Kariaure noted in the listing that they can buy from collectors, but also museums if anyone is interested. This may well align with an initiative established by the Embracer Group.
Obviously, most of us can’t afford this collection, and probably won’t even have the space. But sometimes daydreaming is fun, isn’t it?
