Game news Gran Turismo 7 vs. Forza Horizon 5: Which game for which type of player?
Gran Turismo vs. Forza: A duel between two top-class competitors that has been livening up discussion forums around the world since May 2005. The two licenses that challenge each other in the racing game category were already more or less head-on in Europe, with GT4/Forza (2005), GT6/Forza 5 (2013) and GT Sport/Forza 7 (2017). While future Forza Motorsport is still in development, Gran Turismo 7 has just landed on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4. Just a few months after the release of Forza Horizon 5. Granted, both titles put motorsport in the spotlight, but they do it in very different ways and cater to two different audiences.
Summary
- I like cars, the requirement, and grab a few hundredths at racetracks
- I like immediate fun, open worlds and the arcade
- I want to compete against players from all over the world

I like cars, the requirement, and grab a few hundredths at racetracks
Some would say it’s more rigorous, others that it’s more elegant. Gran Turismo 7 is a simulation driven racing game that is both technical and accessible. It allows the player to buy different cars and make a number of adjustments to be as efficient as possible on the asphalt. For example, it is possible to configure its suspensions, manage the DGL or adjust the gearbox to gain responsiveness or top speed. The title’s 420 cars will be driven on 34 circuits (90 tracks in total, counting variations), including rare rally races. Of course, Gran Turismo 7 comes with a whole range of options aimed at making its experience more accessible, such as: B. traction control or ABS, but it’s still aimed more at car enthusiasts than at newcomers. So to tell the truth, Gran Turismo 7 reconnects to this site”Racing game RPG“: We start with a small city car to gradually progress to extremely powerful vehicles. Many fans see it as a kind of interactive museum that encourages collecting legendary cars. With its unlockable licenses and challenge-packed GT mode, Polyphony Digital’s software once again becomes the “Real driving simulator“, which his fans have long hoped for since the fourth episode.
For its part, Forza Horizon 5 also caters to players who want to beat the best times, take part in classic races on circuits and change various settings with its 500 cars (at launch). But the goal of the game lies elsewhere: to transport the pilot into a fun open world where daring is allowed, with challenges that defy reason (racing against a train, riding a pinata vehicle, climbing a volcano, the… threatens to explode … break out, etc.). Unlike GT7, fair play is not evaluated online: it is therefore possible to field other cars without risking heavy penalties.
- Most suitable: Gran Turismo 7
Is it the fact that we’re instantly thrown out of a plane to land a few kilometers from an active volcano that makes us say that Forza Horizon 5 is an ode to arcade-oriented racing games? Unless it’s the burst of speed behind the wheel of a Corvette in the middle of a sandstorm that comes just minutes after the adventure begins? With the organization of the fifth Horizon Festival, Playground Games has allowed itself all excess. Immediately fun, Forza Horizon 5 with its large Mexican open world makes it fun by offering many challenges, from road racing to cross-country. There are also publicity stunts, rallies and expeditions. On the large map we also find barn treasures as well as bonus boards. As in previous episodes, drivers in Forza Horizon 5 are always rewarded whether they finish first or last in a race. More than ever it tries to adapt to the wishes of the pilots, even if these are abused by the astronomical content of the title.
In contrast, Gran Turismo 7 is a fairly classic circuit racing game, even if it includes original modes like the Musical Rally (unfortunately disappointing). Forza Horizon 5 is an open world game that allows for shopping and a whole range of other activities. With the players’ creations designed thanks to the Lab mode, the Playground software has enough in its engine to keep the players going for dozens of hours. Community aspects are developed in both titles, taking photos, creating liveries and improving performances. However, in Forza Horizon 5 you can create your own special routes and challenges.
- Most Suitable: Forza Horizon 5
I want to compete against players from all over the world
Online gaming has become an important part of Gran Turismo and Forza Horizon. Therefore, today it is common to find online component developed in these two series. Gran Turismo 7, which has eSports aspirations since GT Sport, includes a “Sports‘, where it’s possible to do laps around the circuits all day to set the best qualifying time in three different events. Then, the work of Polyphony Digital gives access to the creation of lounges to organize tournaments or simply do laps on the circuits with strangers or in the company of best friends. From the weather to the approved preparations on the vehicles, almost everything can be configured.
Forza Horizon 5 also has a whole anthology of features to play online with friends or strangers you meet on a country road. The shared world of the fourth part returns, which means that the user finds himself in a Mexico where other speeders drive at the same time, drivers who can be challenged or invited into a convoy. Many events highlight multiplayer, such as King, Infected, Capture the Flag or even the Battle Royal Eliminator. As for the Horizon Tour, it is a championship that must be done in collaboration. There is something for every taste.

I want to get my eyes full and my ears full
If the first Gran Turismo were real graphic slaps, Gran Turismo 7 no longer has the same effect today. It is good looking but quite pretty: the lighting effects are basically successful and the sky is reproduced well, regardless of whether the weather is cloudy or sunny. The public and the various NPCs are in a 3D summary. The game aims for purity of realism, but some effects are a bit off (such as mud). Rain management on the track is well done. The vehicles themselves are well modeled and their interiors have seen a lot of work. As for the soundtrack, the results have been mixed. The music selection is there, but the selection leaves a lot to be desired. Unfortunately it is impossible to change the music during a race.
Forza Horizon 5, meanwhile, is broadcasting heavily on Xbox Series X and PC. The graphics are great whether you play in quality mode (4K/30fps) or in performance mode (4K/60fps). The viewing distance is gigantic, the elements with physics engine are remarkable, the special effects are numerous, the cars are well modeled and the environments are detailed. These beautiful graphics feature different biomes with beaches, deserts, cities, rainforests, swamps and more. As for the soundtrack, Forza Horizon is festive. With its six radio stations (Pulse, Bass Arena, Block Party, XS, Hospital and Eterna) it offers sparkling music from radio hosts who give their all. If the animators bother you, you can disable them in the options.
- Best Suited: Forza Horizon 5 (on Series X or on a large PC)
In the history of video games there are many battles between two licenses fighting for first place, such as PES vs FIFA or Street Fighter vs Mortal Kombat. Gran Turismo 7 was created for you if you like accessible simulations that celebrate cars, while Forza Horizon 5 will delight fans of arcades and motorized open worlds who love cutting through fields. We’ll now have to await more information on the next Forza Motorsport to see how Gran Turismo 7 will fare in the small game of comparisons.
