Gran Turismo 7’s The February update is coming, adding VR functionality, more cars, and some really nice AI racers.
Early last month, Sony announced that Gran Turismo 7 would be receiving an update that allows you to play the game with PlayStation VR2, and starting with an update tomorrow (February 21), the feature is officially ready. The actual headset doesn’t come out until February 22nd, so it’s still a few days away, but if you manage to get yours early, you’ll be able to hit the track in a much more immersive way.
An exclusive VR showroom area has also been added as part of the update, which, as confirmed by a post on the official PlayStation Blog, only lets you view car models in a range of positions and lighting settings. This basically sounds like a “your dad wants to stop by the local Audi dealership to look at it for a while, maybe take one out and try it out” simulator.
A new mode has also been added called Sophy Race Together, which adds something that’s a bit of a hot topic right now: AI. Okay, sure, a lot of games do, but this particular AI (called Sophy) was specially trained to play Gran Turismo 7, with multiple difficulty levels to choose from. The post simply refers to the AI as having “superhuman racing skills” and doesn’t do a good job of identifying what’s unique about it, but maybe it’s worth trying to see if it feels similar to racing a real person. It’s only available for a limited time, though, from February 21st until the end of March, so you might want to try it out early.
The classic Grand Valley track also returns in this update with a brand new look. Great for trying out the five new cars that have been added to the game, including the Citroën DS 21 Pallas ’70, which looks so futuristic that it’s hard to even tell if it has any windows.
The 1.29 update for Gran Turismo 7 is available for download on February 20th at 10pm PST / February 21st at 6am GMT / 3pm JST.
