Grand Theft Auto V was supposed to have a major DLC centered around Trevor, but the immense success of GTA Online ultimately prevented that.
Grand Theft Auto V has been successful for over a decade now – partly because a successor is still a long way off, and partly because GTA Online has been a huge hit. This success of the online part is ultimately also to blame for the fact th at a large DLC for the single-player experience of GTA 5 has not been released. This has now been confirmed by a former Rockstar Games employee. It had already been reported that there were originally plans for a whopping eight DLC packages.
The former Rockstar employee is Joseph Rubino, who has now spoken about the issue in an interview with YouTuber SanInPlay. “We split our teams into two parts, with me staying with GTA Online and this DLC – in which Steven Ogg was a very important part. Some of the team then moved on to Red Dead Redemption 2 early on,” said Rubino.
According to Rubino, many of the contents of the DLC pack, which was later scrapped due to the success of GTA Online, would have found their way into GTA Online in other ways, without going into specific details. If everything had gone according to the original plan, the additional content would have featured Trevor as a kind of undercover agent.
“When GTA Online came out, it became such a cash cow and people loved it so much that it was hard to make a case for a standalone DLC that would top that. Looking back, I would say maybe they could have done both, but that was ultimately a business decision they made and I was actually a little upset about it,” Rubino said of the DLC cancellation.
According to him, the DLC was already about half finished when it was finally canceled.
