Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has been on virtual shelves since October 28, which is three days at this point. During this time, hordes of shooter fans sprinted through the multiplayer or let off steam in the single-player campaign.
The fact that Call of Duty is one of the biggest video games ever is shown again by the specific Steam numbers. Around 260,000 players were active at the same time on Steam alone at the best time. Of course, PlayStation, Xbox and Battle.net drastically increase the number of people who are active at the same time.
But this success is overshadowed. Because not all numbers are rosy on Steam. A look at the Steam reviews reveals that only 56 percent of all reviews praise Modern Warfare 2. A total of 14,000 reviews would not currently recommend the shooter hit. We took a look at why CoD is causing so much disappointment.
Incidentally, there is currently no summary of the critics’ opinions. After all, journalists first had to play the multiplayer in peace. But you can already find out how good we think the campaign is in our test:

That’s what the critics say on Steam
Even if the critics are actually still outnumbered, the sheer mass is anything but a good sign. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 on Steam is currently only balanced. A look at the reviews reveals what upsets people the most:
- The most common criticism concerns the technical condition of Modern Warfare 2. Especially in multiplayer, there are currently crashes all the time.
- In addition to a lot of criticism of various game features, you mostly read about annoying spawns and too many campers. The maps are also widely criticized.
- In addition, you can read again and again that Modern Warfare 2 should feel very unfinished. A phenomenon that editor-in-chief Dimi goes into detail about in his column.
- Incidentally, you can often read about the fact that Modern Warfare 2 no longer has a hardcore mode. However, this is to be submitted later with the new designation Tier 1.
the user Slackjaw drew a resigned conclusion and goes into the many crashes, among other things:
Is it too much to ask these days that games just work upon release?
Constant crashes, menu sometimes hangs for minutes, reset keybinds… always crashes when I try to play in a party. […]
Life.exe already has 15 hours in Call of Duty, in his review
Most game modes are completely full of campers. In its current state, the game is basically the beta version for $70. Most of the maps are also simply unusable as they are either way too open or way too big. Add to that the Vault Edition, which unlocks almost every attachment for the M4, giving you a massive advantage now that the game is out. […]
Der User Travers holt in his review also as a general statement from:
I was really looking forward to MW 2 because I really enjoyed the 2019 release. But this part is sadly just disappointing!!! The game crashes very often, the menu is complicated and confusing, even the hardcore mode is missing!!! The multiplayer is an absolute letdown for me. […]

That’s what the proponents say on Steam
However, not all current reviews are negative. Many users are largely satisfied with the game or recognize its strengths despite all its weaknesses. In fact, even the positive reviews often complain about crashes. These points are praised most often:
- The single player campaign gets the highest praise from most reviews.
- The weapons should feel extremely good and be easy to use.
the user [BVB09]While Xaron is very annoyed about the crashes with larger groups, it is Generally satisfied with the game.
Good morning! I don’t usually write a lot of reviews, but I’ll make an exception here. So it’s definitely a better CoD than the last two parts. Gameplay moderately really great, campaign is also very good, there is nothing to complain about the graphics either. The multiplayer is fun too. But as things stand, there is a big but! If you want to play with your friends, you have to look forward to the crash simulator 2022. […]
The user Tensenuma has hardly had any crashes so far and is very satisfied with both the campaign and the multiplayer.
The game crashed once for me, otherwise it runs smoothly. I’ve played 30 hours and no complaints. The campaign was good (wish it had a better story like what happens at the end). Co-op is good (missing the original MW Spec Ops a bit). The multiplayer is good. […]
As soon as our test team has spent enough time in multiplayer, we will also report back to you with our professional opinion. Until then, feel free to discuss in the comments whether you like Modern Warfare 2 or whether it’s a big disappointment.
