A couple of former Payday developers started their own business and founded a new studio. 10 Chambers Collective first introduced GTFO at the Game Awards two years ago. Version 0.1 has now been released on Steam. Even if the cooperatively playable horror shooter still has a long way to go, the potential is already recognizable.
GTFO is as early access as a game can be. You can recognize this from the fact that there is currently no matchmaking. Instead, a reference is made to a Discord server. You should definitely go with other players, because GTFO is relentlessly difficult. But what is it all about?

You slip into the role of prisoners entrusted with the task of exploring complex underground structures and finding artifacts. This is by no means a walk, because deadly dangers lurk everywhere in the form of hideous creatures.
Greetings from Left 4 Dead
The exploration tours through the poorly lit rooms and halls are immediately reminiscent of Valves' classic Left 4 Dead. This is also because you experience a slightly different gameplay with every restart. The mission objective remains the same, but the locations where you can find the required mission items vary from trial to trial, as does the distribution of opponents.
This gives the crisp shooter experience just so much unpredictability that you can never feel safe, even if you become more familiar with the area over time. Therefore tactical action is of the utmost importance. Depending on the equipment you choose, you can set up turrets, anticipate enemy contacts using the locating device, or fully glue the area with the adhesive gun to slow down the nauseating creatures. So even before the mission starts, you should coordinate well and take a healthy mix of different tools and weapons with you.
Between planning and pure chaos
GTFO doesn't just throw a horde of monsters at a time at the mouths, but only occasionally puts you under pressure. For example, if you have to gather in front of a locked gate, the alarm goes off and the enemies are heard. On the one hand you have to defend yourself against the monsters, on the other hand you have to try to deactivate the alarm by stepping on the corresponding switches in the ground. These moments feel extremely intense, but also give you enough time to adjust to them beforehand. GTFO never becomes unfair.
Some clever ideas already stand out in GTFO. For example, the map on which each player can draw marks. Particularly helpful if you want to coordinate. There you can also see the symbols for chests and cupboards, which contain valuable utensils.
You will also find a few computer terminals in the area with which you can interact. They show in which sections you can find items such as medipacks, ammunition bags or key cards for the progress of the campaign. This minimizes the proverbial search for the needle in the haystack.
Just the beginning
The developers' plan to replace the campaign over time has run wild. That means: The levels that you can play now will be replaced by others at some point, which limits the game content but keeps it fresh on a regular basis.
