Robbie Coltrane, who played the half-giant Rubeus Hagrid in the Harry Potter saga, is dead. Daniel Radcliffe or Emma Watson paid tribute to him.
He will have been one of the emblematic characters of the Harry Potter franchise in cinema. Robbie Coltrane, aka Rubeus Hagrid, has died at the age of 72.
Robbie Coltrane, Hagrid in Harry Potter, is no more
Mourn fans of the Harry Potter film saga. Robbie Coltrane, the half-giant Rubeus Hagrid who appeared in every film up to The Last Deathly Hallows, has died in a hospital in Scotland. The causes were not clarified by his agency, but a few years ago he was struggling with severe osteoarthritis, which forced him to get around in a wheelchair.
In a moving passage from the documentary Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts, Robbie Coltrane spoke about how even after his death, his character Hagrid would have a chance to live forever and cross generations.
The legacy of these films is that … my children will show them to their children. So you can easily see them again in 50 years. I won’t be here, unfortunately, but Hagrid, yes.
The words of the actors of the saga
Those who were by his side, who grew up with him like Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter), Emma Watson (Hermione) or even Bonnie Wright (Ginny) commented on this disappearance.
Robbie was the funniest uncle I’ve ever had, but most of all he was very caring and compassionate towards me, both as a child and as an adult. His talent was so immense that it made sense that he was playing a giant – he could fill any room with his geni us. Robbie, if I ever get the chance to be as kind on set as you are to me, I promise I will do it on your behalf and in your memory. Know how much I adore and admire you. I will really miss your sweetness, your nicknames, your warmth, your laughter and your hugs. You made us a family. Know that you were that for us. There was no better Hagrid. Thanks to you, it was a pleasure to be Hermione.

Robbie was one of the funniest people I’ve ever met and he kept us laughing all the time as kids on set. I especially remember him when we spent hours sheltering from the torrential rain in Hagrid’s cabin on Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, and he would tell us stories and jokes to cheer us up. He was a great actor and a lovely man.
