Now that the machine has started, PlayStation will multiply the releases of its games on PC and mobile. The exclusive PS5 Returnal has also been spotted in the Steam database.
Sony Interactive Entertainment’s investment in the PC market has been evident for several months. But there the manufacturer crosses a course with a strong announcement. In the medium term, the goal is to have half of the PlayStation games on PC and mobile.
PlayStation takes on PC and mobile
In 2021, SIE announced the acquisition of Nixxes with one goal: to flood the PC with its games. So much so that a PlayStation PC label was created specifically for it. If we were also aware of the manufacturer’s desire to accelerate its new strategy, we now have a clearer idea of the goals to be met.
In a recent presentation to shareholders, the Japanese company uncovered wants to release half of its PlayStation exclusives on PC and cell phones. The other half is represented by the PS5.
In the past, PS Studios has been wonderfully successful in its business of offering a strong portfolio of story-driven, graphically rich, single-player games. But there is no doubt that we have limited ourselves to a very narrow part of the market. By opening up to PC and mobile, and it must be said also to service gaming, we have the opportunity to go from a situation where we are present in a very small segment of the video game market to an almost ubiquitous presence. I think if we get it right, if we do things with intelligence and excellence, there are opportunities to increase the number of people playing our games, the number of people enjoying them and spending money to acquire them , exponentially large.
Jim Ryan, CEO and President of Sony Interactive Entertainment.
The excluded PS5 return soon on PC?
On the other hand, not a word about the pace of the releases. Will the group “sacrifice” their ban by releasing it on PC on day one? We don’t see that today. And Shawn Layden, former president of Sony Worldwide Studios, doesn’t think so either. Right now there are signs that PlayStation is waiting for sales to quiet down to restart them through a “second” PC launch.
In that regard, Returnal might be the next port since it was seen on SteamDB. A surprise that really isn’t one. In fact, it was one of the titles listed alongside God of War in the Nvidia leak. And as we know, for many apps that listing ended up being accurate.
