Halo Infinite was apparently supposed to get a direct sequel, but it was ultimately canceled.
There’s been a lot going on at 343 Industries recently, after all the development studio was renamed Halo Studios and was given a new direction in relation to the Halo franchise including the use of Unreal Engine 5. Things could have turned out completely differently, because according to a new report, a real sequel to the last title, Halo Infinite 2, was already in the works.
The relevant information now comes from Rebs Gamingwho are usually well informed when it comes to Halo. Halo Infinite 2 was in the works based on the Slipspace Engine, which was programmed specifically for the first Infinite. According to the report, development was pushed forward for some time until Halo Infinite 2 changes were made at the management level, which ultimately resulted in the decision to switch the entire franchise to Unreal Engine 5 in the future. Therefore, Infinite 2 based on the Slipspace Engine was ultimately discontinued.
Rebs continued: “The creative team at 343 Industries spent several months learning Unreal Engine 5 and preparing it for the next project. This lasted until January 2023, when Microsoft laid off a significant number of employees at 343, including also the entire creative team.”
It is currently unclear whether the next main part of the renowned action series will be Halo Infinite 2 only based on Unreal Engine 5 or a completely different and new Halo game.
