Gladiator is one of those films that, no matter when you see it, remains one of the most impressive films ever made in the film industry. The play directed by Ridley Scott had stellar scenery and performances, but it also had Hans Zimmer to provide a soundtrack that has gone down in history.
However, for the sequel to be released this year, the composer decided to step away from the production and chose one of his disciples to play his role in this film. Now, in an interview with CurzonZimmer has explained why he decided to say “No” to Gladiator 2.
“It’s really very simple. I have made that world. And I think I did it well. And all I would do is prepare myself to try to repeat it, which I don’t want to do, or be slaughtered by critics who say you didn’t do it so well. like the first time. (…) Gladiator holds a special place in my heart. I think it is completely undisciplined. It wouldn’t have mattered if he had written the most incredible score, because the music from the first film stays engraved in the heart of people. I had that experience doing the live version of The Lion King. I tried to get outside of my own vocabulary. Every time I did it, it didn’t work. All I could do was repeat myself. You owe it to yourself, and to the audience, try to do new things.”
The composer wants to avoid problems and, knowing that the original soundtrack of the first film still continues to mark generations, he prefers to pass the baton to one of his disciples to demonstrate that his legacy is still valid in many composers.
It will be Harry Gregson-Williams who is in charge of providing the music to the most impressive scenes of the film. And yes, perhaps her name sounds familiar, since in addition to participating in films like Shrek o The Chronicles of Narniais the main composer of the Metal Gear Solid saga since Sons of Liberty.
