Giving an 11-year-old an invisibility cloak seems pretty irresponsible at first glance. Why does Dumbledore still trust Harry with this magical item?
The “Harry Potter” films will be shown on free TV every week until Christmas: The weekly broadcast of all parts begins in late autumn. Here you can find all the broadcast dates of the “Harry Potter” films!
- At age 11, Harry receives the magical immortal cloak that once belonged to his father.
- The plan to give Harry the cloak so young came from Dumbledore. But isn’t that irresponsible?
- Harry regularly uses the cloak to circumvent Hogwarts school rules.
In “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone”, Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) unexpectedly finds a cloak that makes invisible among his presents at Christmas. Unaware of how powerful this cloak is, he promptly uses it to sneak into the library and get into the forbidden section.
It is unlikely that an eleven-year-old would use this cloak responsibly. Never fully resolved in the films, the irresponsible person behind the gift even seems to be Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore (Richard Harris) himself. Harry’s father gave it to Dumbledore before his death and wanted it that way, the books reveal.
But couldn’t Dumbledore have waited a few more years until Harry was a little more mature to handle such a powerful cloak responsibly? Probably not, because Dumbledore had big plans for Harry Potter from the start!
Dumbledore encourages and rewards Harry for breaking school rules
The fact that Dumbledore gives Harry a cloak at such a young age so that he can wander through the castle unseen and eavesdrop on conversations could be because Dumbledore wants to motivate Harry to be independent from the start.
It’s no secret that Voldemort has his sights set on Harry and therefore many things that happen in the castle revolve around Harry. Giving the person concerned a means of freedom to investigate and solve puzzles themselves is therefore not that unreasonable.
The fact that Dumbledore also takes a certain amount of joy in seeing Harry regularly breaking school rules and in the process also helping Dumbledore himself and the wizarding world in the fight against Voldemort is reinforced by the fact that Harry can break school rules with impunity like no one else.
He is regularly forgiven and when Snape (Alan Rickman) wants to come around the corner with worse consequences, there is always a Dumbledore who intervenes. And at the end of the year, give Gryffindor additional points so that the house wins the house cup!
