If you were hoping that Furiosa would be released in black and white like Mad Max: Fury Road , you’re in luck.
Mad Max: Fury Road and Furiosa are both fairly colorful films, but some people might wish there was no color for some odd reason. Or maybe you just like the look of old-school black-and-white movies and wish more movies chose to forgo color for more than just narrative gimmicks. Mad Max: Fury Road did get a black-and-white version after its initial release, technically called the Black and Chrome version (a name that’s hard to make sense of, to be honest), and now it looks like Furiosa will get a similar treatment.
Director George Miller recently appeared on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast to talk all things Furiosa and confirmed that his latest effort, Mad Max, will also be edited in black and white. This time he’s calling it “Tinted Black and Chrome,” which doesn’t sound too far off the mark. “We’ve done it before. This is the last one I did on this movie, and I called it Tinted Black and Chrome. It’s really interesting, and I’m still trying to unravel why black and white has something more fundamental to me. I still can’t put my finger on it. It’s not because they look like old black and white movies, but something else. It’s like, if we took a picture of ourselves right now, it would probably look more dramatic if it was in black and white.”

Black and white versions of movies aren’t very common these days, but when done right, they can really offer a unique experience that’s different from the original film. There doesn’t seem to be any word on when Furiosa will be available for Chrome, so we’ll just have to wait and see if it’ll be released in theaters or go straight to DVD.
Fran gave us more details on Furiosa’s recent run, saying that while “it’s a little loose and often feels redundant in places, it was a treat to return to Miller’s strange wasteland and that I walked out thinking ‘hey, Immortan Joe isn’t actually a very bad apocalyptic ruler’, which should tell you all you need to know about how much it adds to the mean-spirited yet colourful world it reinvigorated nine years ago. I imagine it will age better like a fine wine as we get used to its rough edges.”
