If it wasn’t already obvious, HBO’s last survivor was so incredibly successful that it was actually Max’s second highest-grossing show.
Whether you like the live-action adaptation of The Last of Us or not, the show has clearly been incredibly successful. That’s apparently in part because it has a pre-established fan base for the game, as well as a highly-rated Chernobyl performer, but it’s not clear how well it’s doing until it’s released. Well, according to Warner Bros Discovery’s recent financial results (thanks VGC), it’s doing pretty well: as it stands, it’s been watched by over 30 million subscribers on HBO Max.
The only show with higher ratings was the final season of Game of Thrones, but as VGC pointed out, that was mostly US, European and Latin American ratings. HBO Max, or simply Max as it will soon be known, is currently unavailable in the UK, meaning the numbers are almost certainly higher than in the UK. Those numbers shouldn’t come as a surprise, though, as the show also ended up being HBO’s second-biggest debut of all time, behind House of the Dragon.
Apparently, all of this success means the show is here to stay, with HBO renewing it for a second season, just a few more episodes after it aired earlier this year. There’s no word yet on when the second season will arrive, though showrunner Bella Ramsey says it should arrive in late 2024 or early 2025 at the latest.
We don’t know how long the second season will last, but it should be noted that there is currently a writers’ strike in the US. As it turns out, streaming is incredibly profitable for many companies, and writers don’t see the benefits. This might affect the timing of the second season, but it doesn’t really matter since it’s more important that the writers get paid properly for their work.
