while the original last survivor Just a brief look at life before the fungal outbreak, and HBO’s live-action adaptation will let us learn more about the past.
Set on this day in 2013, The Last of Us gives us a glimpse into the lives of Joel and his daughter Sarah before everything went wrong. But for the most part, it’s focused on the post-apocalyptic future, with the only extended fl ashback in the game’s DLC “Behind” after the virus ravages the states, focusing more on Ellie’s struggles with Joe. before we were together. However, in a recent interview with IGN, actor Gabriel Luna, who plays Joel’s brother Tommy on the HBO show, said we’ll see more of the Miller family on the show than in the game (Thanks to Eurogamer).
“We started exploring a lot of the moments leading up to the incendiary events … we saw them temporarily become a family,” Luna said in the interview. “Those moments where things are still normal are funny and important to the story, you know, what this little family is like when they’re not fighting for their lives.” Tommy was also in that opening scene , but we still don’t see what he looked like before the Infectors were rampant.
Neil Druckmann, one of the direc tors of the first game, also noted that the show will take place in the same year we’re currently in (2023, for those who may not have checked the calendar). Showrunner Craig Mazin also noted this in an interview with TechRadar in order to make the show feel a little more real.
“I had this idea of jumping into the future,” Mazin said. “I feel like if I’m watching a show and the year is 2023 and the show takes place in 2043, it’s kind of unreal. Even if I’m watching a show in 2023 and it’s happening in 2016, it’s kind of unreal. Real.” So I thought it might be interesting to just say, ‘Hey, look, in this parallel universe, this is happening. Here’s what happened this year. ‘”
HBO’s The Last of Us is set to hit theaters on Jan. 15, so we’ve got almost a full week until we see the movie.
