You don’t have to be very aware of the latest developments in the video game industry to have read and/or heard something about Helldivers 2. Its name has not stopped resonating since its launch at the beginning of February, even surpassing such wonderful installments as Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.
There are many reasons why Helldivers 2 It is being a true nuclear explosion: a launch on PS5 and PC (with thousands of users asking for its arrival on Xbox), its absurdly fun and addictive gameplay, microtransactions that do not seek to stab each player’s wallet, etc. In Vida Extra you can find several publications with more than a dozen reasons to play it.
The most important reason is at the same time the most unknown to most players who have not yet been captivated by its military propaganda campaign. After talking to several acquaintances and browsing Reddit, I have found that a large number of people do not know how exactly it works Helldivers 2. And they freak out when someone tells them!
All against a certain Joel in Helldivers 2
How exactly does it work Helldivers 2?, What is the core of the video game? Beyond the satire of the United States in the style of Starship Troopers and the explosions of its gameplay, there is a cooperative experience like we have rarely seen before. Those responsible, Arrowhead Games Studios, found inspiration in Dungeons & Dragons
Helldivers 2 There is no nonsense when it comes to explaining your mission: you are a soldier, a simple cog in the war machine of SuperEarth, even though the government insists on telling you that you are special. Or put another way: you are the most expendable cannon fodder in the universe. A cookie container has more recycling value than a helldiver.
The mission is simple like the mechanism of a pacifier: democratically kill anything Let him get in your way and fulfill each objective that is ordered without asking questions. You are part of an army/community and each of your missions contributes to a total that is updated in real time. The universe of Helldivers 2 is constantly changing due to a tug of war… which is apparently against the AI, represented by Automata and Terminids.
If we assume that not telling the whole truth is lying, then this is the meta-lie (without malicious intent) that the game tells you both as a helldiver and as a player. In reality, the two factions of the game (three, if the predictions come true) are the tool that does the dirty work for the real puppeteer, the final boss that hides behind the veil: the developers at Arrowhead Games Studios, the same ones who They send us into battle. The irony (with reality) is still exquisite.
The war campaign of Helldivers 2 It is a war that pits developers against the gaming community. Helldivers, Automata and Terminids are just the pawns that star in a story that is literally written every day. It may seem complex and convoluted, but it is simpler than you imagine.
Each planet has a progress bar. The SuperEarth side (humans, Helldivers) progresses as the players carry out operations. The more successes, the higher the percentage for us until total release/defense. It needs us. On the other hand, the enemy invasion is constant. The amount of progress, which is your defenses, attacks or counterattacks, varies according to the values adjusted by a Game Master, known by the name of Joel. He is a tug of war between them and us.
Humanity, war and the unpredictability of emotions
To the magic of Helldivers 2 is that it is a completely unpredictable experience. A Game Master (along with his team) and a community of millions of players (who do not always agree with each other) are responsible for making the decisions in this give and take. It is something genuine, very human.
It’s been just over a month since launch and we’ve already written two important episodes in the game’s history: the Spill Oil campaign and the Battle of Tien Kwan. I have already told you about both events in previous publications, but I think they deserve to be told in summary:
- Spill Oil Campaign– The community focused on conquering the planet Mort. It was a nightmare. Meanwhile, the Game Master (Joel) took the opportunity to reinforce enemy progress on Malevelon Creek, one of the planets most loved by the community and nicknamed Robot Vietnam. We lost the planet and the community rallied to get it back in record time.
- Battle of Tien Kwan. The Game Master sent his Automata to invade the planet Tien Kwan (where the Mecha factory is located) at the last minute (March 7), causing new content to be delayed until the planet was retaken. The community won it back in record time, it didn’t take us even 24 hours, and on top of that we caused the servers to go down on the evening of March 8. The mechas were available from the first minute after being reconquered.
Helldivers 2 It is something authentic and unique. The changes and evolution of its universe, including the lore, feel natural (or less artificial than the rest) because the executing hands on both sides are human. The events are the result of decisions made through a logical strategy, as proposed ghoxing and Redditor carried by emotions, as happened in Spill Oil.
Likewise, the Game Master (and his team) may choose to give us a break on all fronts today and/or delay the arrival of content for technical or emotional reasons tomorrow. Maybe another day he gets up on his left foot and launches a big offensive with the bugs. Or maybe they invade SuperEarth and we have to fight as if there were no tomorrow. Or they flip the War Table with a new faction. Or not. Or if. Helldivers 2 It’s like a crazy, chaotic box of chocolates: you never know what you’re going to find. And it is beautiful!
