Several weeks ago we heard a piece of news that caught us all off guard: Hellboy it was going to receive a new reboot after a rather irregular film in 2019 that could not overcome the version of del Toro and with Ron Perlman as Anung Un Rama. Well, with the leading actor already announced and knowing some details about the plot, the new news that has come about the film comes directly from its creator, Mike Mignola.
As he told through an interview with Variety to talk, among other things, about The Crooked Man, Mignola has been seen very positive about this new revision of his character and the vision that his director has Brian Taylor.
“[Taylor] He wants to make a horror movie, so it will be interesting. I read the new draft of the script yesterday, and yes, it’s definitely +18. It’s the first Hellboy script I read and I said: ‘Oh, it’s a horror movie,’ which is what I’ve always wanted.”
Mignola also wanted to talk about the hopes you have in this rebootsince according to his account, unlike the other movies of his superhero, this one is really low budget because it does not necessarily need large expenses in its production to tell a short but very effective work such as The Crooked Man.
“For years I’ve always said the same thing: if you’re going to make a Hellboy movie, make it small. And the perfect story to do it is my favorite: The Crooked Man. I think it’s one of the best things I’ve ever written. It’s beautifully illustrated by Richard Corben, and it’s a solid story that doesn’t involve a million different characters. Budget-wise, it’s good because it’s a low-budget story. It is not the origin of Hellboy. It’s not Hellboy saving the world. It is not huge. It’s a subtle, dark little folk horror story“.
We will have to see how the production of this film evolves, but if everything goes as Mignola wants, we could be facing the purer version and similar to Hellboy on the big screen after the failed attempts or not so similar to the original superhero in recent years.
