The first trailer for the latest version of “Hellboy” has been released. This time it’s subtitled “The Twisted Man” and it looks… pretty good!
Hellboy is generally a fairly recognizable character, both because of his iconic look (sawed-off horns? Giant fists? Classic!) and because of Guillermo del Toro’s take on the character in his two films. So of course there have been more attempts to capitalize on the comic book series’ rich history, with 2019’s Hellboy starring David Harbour ultimately flopping at the box office. Now, five years later, there’s another Hellboy: Twisted Man on the way, with the first trailer having been released yesterday. The script for the character’s third film was actually co-written by Hellboy creator Mike Mignola, with the film’s director Brian Taylor also contributing to the script alongside author Christopher Golden.
You can check out the first trailer for the film above, and to be honest, it looks a little cheap. If you told me this was a fan film, I would probably believe you because while the makeup on Hellboy (played by Jack Kesy) looks good, if you go back and look at Del Toro’s Hellboy, you can’t help but think that the original looked better. One thing I appreciate about the look of Twisted Man is that it seems to be more focused on the horror vibe than the first three films, which definitely fits with the overall vibe of the character.

Director Taylor is no stranger to comic book adaptations either, having previously written Jonah Hex and directed Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance and the TV series Happy! Hellboy: Twisted Man is based on the comic book of the same name and is set in rural Appalachia in the 1950s. The protagonist encounters a community plagued by witches, and the leader of the witches is a local demon who has some connection to Hellboy’s past. There is no release date yet, but it is said to be “coming soon.”
