Arrowhead still seems a little taken aback by the success of Helldivers 2 and now seems to realize that a slower update rhythm could be good for the game.
Since the release of Helldivers 2 and its meteoric success, the developers have been patching as much as they can. But now a change seems to be on the horizon. In the official Discord channel, community manager Twinbeard said that a longer period between updates could have a positive effect on the game.
When asked about the timing of the upcoming update, Twinbeard responded with “when it’s done”. “We want to take a little more time for this and possibly future patches as we feel the cadence has been a little too high to maintain the quality standard we want and that you deserve,” said Twinbeard.
Weapon balancing in particular is still a sticking point and Twinbeard said yesterday that the studio needs more time for it. “Patching a lot can easily disrupt the workflow and requires more resources than you might think; it needs to be planned, implemented, monitored and possibly optimized in hotfixes,” said Twinbeard. “In this case, we prefer to drag it out a bit, hopefully with a good result.”
When asked about the future patch rhythm, they said: “I would say we need to try it out and get a feel for it. At the moment we believe that a slightly lower cadence will benefit both us, you and the game.”
After the studio made some seemingly hasty updates that were met with negative feedback, the developers are now also considering introducing test servers where the community can try out the updates before the actual release.
