Since the surprisingly strong launch of Helldivers 2, the developers have been working on the servers. Now Arrowhead Game Studios has announced a significant increase in player limits, just in time for the weekend.
The unexpected success of Helldivers 2 caught the developers at Arrowhead Game Studios off guard. There has been a huge crunch since the first minute and the servers cannot cope with the onslaught, with long waiting times and connection problems as a result.
Originally designed for a maximum of 360,000 players, the limit was quickly raised to 450,000 and now, after a long period of tweaking, the studio has increased significantly again. As studio boss Johan Pilestedt announced via X/Twitter, the servers can now handle up to 700,000 simultaneous players. A significant boost and just in time for the weekend, when a renewed rush of players is expected.
“I have a final update for tonight. We have increased the maximum CCU cap to 700,000. Unfortunately, we expect the CCU to reach this value. We believe the wait times will be much more bearable,” it says the tweet. In addition, further optimizations will be made today to ensure stable operations for the weekend.
Helldivers 2 was released around two weeks ago in parallel for PC and PS5 and was much more successful than expected. For publisher Sony, it was by far the most successful launch of a PC title, attracting more simultaneous players than all of Sony’s previous PC launches combined.
In any case, Arrowhead obviously hit the nerve with the lively co-op alien shooting and, apart from the server problems, colleague Sascha was also extremely impressed in his test of Helldivers 2: “With clever and friendly teammates or friends, Helldivers 2 is a blast! When the enemies advance Burst in the barrage and the missions bring plenty of rewards into my account, I don’t want to stop.”
