Does a major action franchise end before it even gets started? There were damn ambitious plans for Argylle with Henry Cavill in the title role even before it hit the cinema: Matthew Vaughn wants to make at least two film sequels and even a prequel series.
Argylle has a disappointing theatrical release
But things aren’t looking good at the moment: On its international opening weekend, Argylle could loudly Deadline grossing just $16.5 million (so far). That’s actually a bit more than previously predicted.
Originally, experts estimated that Argylle would only break the 15 million mark. For one $200 million action filmwhich is supposed to kick off an entire franchise, is a really slow start.
It is not known whether marketing costs have been taken into account in the estimated budget. But a report from Variety according to Argylle would have to bring in at least 300 millionin order not to make a loss – and that is not necessarily realistic given the latest figures.
Even before its theatrical release, Argylle was plagued by some scathing film reviews – we too were anything but enthusiastic. At Rotten Tomatoes Director Matthew Vaughn’s film received an average of 35 points, and viewers rated it surprisingly generously in direct contrast. At Metacritic However, a similarly disappointing picture emerges at 36 to 49 percent.
Henry Cavill’s new (and old) agents/action films
By the way, Argylle is not the first agent/spy action film with Henry Cavill to fail at the box office: Guy Ritchie’s Codename Uncle also only grossed a measly 13.4 million on its opening weekend in 2015 (via Box Office Mojo). However, with a budget of 75 million, the film didn’t cost anywhere near as much as Argylle.
Meanwhile stands for the 19. April 2024 With The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, the next action film with Henry Cavill by Guy Ritchie is already in the starting blocks. You can watch the official trailer as follows:

The ambitious sequel plans for Argylle
Back to Argylle: As already mentioned, the film is actually intended to kick off a new action franchise. Director Matthew Vaughn is planning at least two cinema sequels – one of them with Henry Cavill as Argylle in focus – and a sequel series that will then revolve around the young Aubrey Argylle (Louis Partrige).
Matthew Vaughn also promised a crossover with one of his well-known action franchises: Kingsman. This is where the ending and post-credits scene of Argylle comes into play. You can read more about it here:
