If the Game Awards give us a pretty accurate idea of the best titles of the year, then which are the worst games? Exactly, we finally have an exact list. And that hurts.
Metacritic, the popular review aggregation website, has released its list of the 10 worst games of the year, based on the weighted averages of their respected critics. And let me tell you, there were some major disappointments! As always with this type of top, it’s as funny as it is sad. Because we always try to put ourselves in the shoes of the studio behind a game, and that has to be very complicated.
A top 10 that is painful, the worst games are…
At the top of the list of these games is The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, an action-fantasy adventure developed by Daedalic Entertainment. Unfortunately for Gollum, his journey to regain the One Ring did not impress critics. Between an outdated design, clunky controls, and a boring story, the reviews were merciless. The Guardian even called it “derivative, uninteresting and fundamentally flawed.” In short, it hurts. For the tip itself we find:
- The Lord of the Rings: Gollum – 34
- Flashback 2 – 35
- Greyhill Incident – 38
- Error quantity – 40
- Testament: The Order of the High Humans – 41
- Crime Boss: Rockay City – 43
- Hellboy: Web of Wyrd – 47
- Gangs of Sherwood – 48
- Loop8: Summer of the Gods – 49
- Gargoyles Remastered – 49
Strangely, and much to our surprise, we find neither The Walking Dead: Destinies nor Skull Island: Rise of Kong in this ranking, despite the latter achieving a disastrous score of 23. The Metacritic page states as justification that a game must have at least 7 professional reviews included. Which isn’t the case with Kong, where there are only 5. That explains it.
Other gems on this list include Crime Boss: Rockay City, a cooperative first-person shooter that takes us into the underbelly of ’90s Florida, and Flashback 2, a sequel to the 1992 sci-fi classic. These games have high ambitions and are star-studded and couldn’t find their audience.
