The arrival of the big PlayStation video games to film and television does not stop, and The Last of Us Part 2 is heading to Max in 2025. The wait will not be short, but the first official trailer achieves exactly the desired effect: preparing both fans of the video game and viewers of the first season for the most cruel, brave and moving work ever made by Naughty Dog.
Max concludes a television phenomenon and begins to warm up the atmosphere for the next one: coinciding with the broadcast of the final episode of House of the Dragon – at least, of the last batch of episodes – he reviews all the original content that will arrive between the end of this year and into the next. Being fully aware that the long-awaited return of Joel and Ellie becomes the new priority of the platform.
The Serie The Last of Us is based on the video game series of the same name by PlayStation Studios and Naughty Dog. The first season aired, and now available on Max, is an adaptation of the first video game that covers the events in a comprehensive manner, adding new elements for viewers and players who know the game inside out. The tone and essence have been preserved from the beginning through a script developed by its creators and the performances of Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey as Joel and Ellie respectively.
The second season of The Last of Us, which is already filmed and whose release has not yet been set on the calendar, will address an undetermined part of the sequel, recently remastered on PS5, returning us to that cruel dystopia in which a parasite has spread on a planetary scale, turning the infected into aggressive beings without the ability to reason. And yet, it is the survivors and their less friendly face that are the greatest dangers that the protagonists of a society that is falling apart must face.
The first trailer not only shows replicas of scenes of enormous importance in the video game, but also allows us to see for the first time several of the new signings for this season, including the iconic Catherine O’Hara, Jeffrey Wright himself, the first look at Isabela Merced as Dina and, more fleetingly, the Sant Lake gang. And although Abby has not been formally introduced, she will be played by Kaitlyn Dever and will have a larger role starting in a second season that is shorter than the first, but much more intense.
In any case, a cast loaded with superheroes with big premieres: Merced has just finished filming Superman as Hawk Girl, we will see Jeffrey Wright return in 2026 as Commissioner Gordon in The Batman 2 and, in between, Pedro Pascal will put on the Reed Richards suit for the MCU’s Fantastic Four.
PlayStation Studios may have missed the opportunity to bring Aloy to Netflix, but its plans to conquer the small and big screen continue. Meanwhile, Naughty Dog continues to prepare new single-player projects and it seems that Neil Druckmann has found inspiration for a new story set in the universe of The Last of Us. Part three? Don’t rule it out.
