Fallout: New Vegas holds a special place in the hearts of many Fallout fans to this day. At least since the development studio Obsidian and rights holder Bethesda were united under the Microsoft umbrella, the community has been hoping for a successor.
Now Bethesda is taking the name herself, quite unobtrusively New Vegas 2
in the mouth, but we shouldn’t get our hopes up too much.
What happened?
Anyone interested can keep track of any updates for Steam games and their product pages on the SteamDB page. Planned updates, betas or test versions that are not yet publicly available can also be seen here.
In this case, Fallout 4 on Steam was updated in the background and the entries for it with the name New Vegas 2
designated. They’ve since been deleted, but they’re still there visible on SteamDB. So is this a hint at a sequel to New Vegas or a remake in the Fallout 4 engine, as fans are already wanting to do:
The answer is most likely: no. After all, if it were a new game, it wouldn’t be included in the Fallout 4 files, but would have its own product page on Steam.
It’s much more likely that it’s an update for Fallout 4 that adds, for example, a New Vegas-related mini-DLC for the Creation Club. There is already a similar extension that lets you visit a small area from Fallout 3 and adds outfits from the predecessor.
It could also be speculated that it is the announced NextGen update that should appear in 2023. Again, New Vegas content may play a role here. But why the whole package is called New Vegas 2 remains a mystery.
What are the odds of New Vegas 2?
It is quite possible that a sequel to Fallout: New Vegas will be developed. In fact, according to an insider, the odds are pretty good that Obsidian could make a second fallout. However, the developer still has his hands full at the moment and has to master his own challenges.
In the near future, the fantasy role-playing game Avowed and Outer Worlds 2 will be on the agenda. So it will probably be years before you can actually work on a New Vegas 2 at all.
What do you think? Is the update just a small Creation Club DLC, or something bigger? And do you also wish for a Fallout New Vegas 2, or rather Fallout 5?
